Voce places third at Eastern Zones
RICHMOND, Va. – Abigail Voce, a member of the Greater Chenango Aquatics Team (GCAT), recently competed in the Eastern Zones Championships in Virginia.
Voce, who will enter the eighth grade this fall, competed in the 50 free, 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle, and the 200 and 400 medley relays as a member of the Adirondack Zone team.
Voce qualified for the Eastern Zones last month at the Long Course Championships held at Colgate University. She met the qualifying times at Colgate with the highest possible classification. "We were talking about going to Eastern Zones early in the season, but Abby was reluctant, at first," said GCAT head coach Saundra Gantt. "The Adirondack team treats its swimmers like Olympians. Once Abby starting sweeping her events at the long course, we re-approached the subject of her going to the Eastern Zones."
There was red tape to clear for Voce to gain a spot at Eastern Zones, and in the end, her outstanding times earned her a spot.
Against the top young swimmers in the East, Voce excelled in the 50 freestyle hitting a 25.02 in the preliminaries to garner the fifth seed before ultimately placing third overall among 64 swimmers entered in the event.
"At the beginning of the season, Abby and I talked about her goals for her upcoming season," Gantt said. "She told me what she wanted to do, we talked about what she needed to do, and she did it. She showed up every day for swim and strength training, she did the work I put in front of her, and she's almost there. We dropped her 50 free time by over a second, which can be very difficult in such short distances. Her 25.02 puts her within .03 of her goal. Sometimes we forget she's only 12, but she's a great girl who is very disciplined in her swimming and her education."
The Eastern Zones meet was streamed live on the Internet, and it gave the rest of the GCAT squad, known as the Chenango Gators, a glimpse at the higher levels of competition. "This is what we would like our swimmers to achieve, and it has always been my goal to give every swimmer the opportunity to get to this higher-level meets," Gantt said. "They are a great experience and a lot of fun."
Gantt said she was proud of her entire team as they improved in times and their speed rating. One year removed from having a team devoid of rated swimmers, nearly the entire squad was at least "A" rated in their best event. "The long course summer league is not for everyone, but the swimmers here were dedicated toward their own success," Gantt said. "And they have all had a lot of success. They work hard and are all great kids. We look forward to next season."
