2nd annual Rock in the Park raises more than $7,000
BAINBRIDGE – Thanks to the generosity of the community and the concerted efforts of those involved, the 2nd annual Rock in the Park, held last Saturday, was a phenomenal success, benefitting Toys for Tots.
Last year, Rock in the Park organizers were able to cut a check for $3,742 to the local Toys for Tots. So far, organizers believe this year’s check will be something closer to $7,000. Although donations and ticket sales are still being counted, organizers are confident that the total will be around twice that of last year’s. The event has now secured a place as the top local fundraiser for the Chenango County Toys for Tots.
However, this immense feat of charity is not enough for lead organizers Erica and Jason Hall, who are determined to make next year’s Rock in the Park even better, and the pair are already planning ahead.
Jason Hall, who works as a regional director of sponsorship sales at Tioga & Vernon Downs Casino, is already working with his promotors to secure next year’s headliner, and although it is far too soon to tell who it will be, some big names have already come up in conversation.
“It is going to be tough to top this year because it was so successful, but we can do it,” said Hall. Although it is hard to give an exact figure for the number of people who attended until all the sold tickets have been counted, Hall estimates around 600 people were in attendance during this past weekend’s concert.
People’s generous spirits and headliner Artimus Pyle – a 2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and drummer with the original Lynryd Skynyrd – brought attendees out in droves for the fundraiser. As a former Marine, Pyle has been a long-time supporter of national Toys for Tots organizations, and when told what Rock in the Park organizers were trying to accomplish he immediately reduced his band’s price tag to something more affordable for the non-for-profit event. After rocking out for a few hours, Pyle also hosted a meet-and-greet.
“Man did he ever,” said Hall, “He sat there for two hours signing autographs and talking to fans, I was ready to call it a day but he just kept on going.”
After the concert, Pyle auctioned seven Lynryd Skynyrd posters from the 70s, when he was a member of Ronnie Van Zant’s band. He then donated an estimated $500 in proceeds to Toys for Tots.
“It’s a huge help,” said Toys for Tots organizer Dennis Rifanburg, referring to the second Rock in the Park fundraiser. “It seems like every year the need for toys is going up and up and these guys stepped up and helped out ... every little bit helps.”
Toys for Tots organizers also presented Pyle and the Halls with an engraved marble plaque thanking them for their efforts.
Rifanburg expressed his continued amazement at the initial success of the first Rock in the Park, noting it was planned in less then a month. The Chenango County Toys for Tots also benefits from national sponsors, such as Toys R’ Us, but its continued ability to provide needy children with toys can most broadly be contributed to the generosity of individuals such as those who organized Rock in the Park.
