Two charged in Coventry following theft of rifle, shotgun
COVENTRY – Two men were arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend in the Town of Coventry and subsequently charged with a number of weapon, theft and drug related crimes.
Eric Nelson, 29, of Afton, was charged with three counts of fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon, third degree burglary, two counts of fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument.
Rory J. Tanner, 29, of Coventry, was charged with third degree burglary, two counts of fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument.
Allegedly, the pair stole an AR-15 rifle and a 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun from a Tracy Road residence in the Town of Bainbridge. It’s alleged that Nelson, a wanted New York State parolee, subsequently sold the shotgun to an undercover police officer while in the Town of Coventry. The AR-15, which was sold separately, was also recovered by authorities. According to the Sheriff’s Office, hypodermic needles, spoons along with heroin residue, and glassine envelopes were all discovered during the course of the investigation. Light was also shed on a number of other larcenies under investigation in the area and additional charges are pending.
Nelson was arraigned in the Town of Bainbridge Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $3,000 cash Bail. Tanner was arraigned in the Town of Coventry Court and remanded to the correctional facility on $5,000 cash bail. Both individuals will be arraigned in the Town of Coventry Court for additional charges which will be brought against them at a later date.
