NORWICH - In the battle for Chenango County supremacy, Norwich’s abbreviated lineup proved that quality was enough to overcome its lack of quantity in a 10-point victory over Greene Friday.
The Purple Tornado had just 11 swimmers on hand, and three – Ravyn Benedict, Erin Gawronski, and Mary Beth Ward – turned in personal-best times. Ward sliced five seconds off her best time to win the 200-yard freestyle, Norwich’s second win of the night. Gawronski had four overall wins on the evening including a new career-low 1:04.63 in the 100 butterfly. Benedict was a winner in the 100 backstroke, Lexi Laundry captured the 500 freestyle, while Nicole Mealey added a win in the 100 breaststroke.
“We had a reduced lineup, and Greene was able to accumulate some depth points to keep it close,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “It was a good meet all around, we just came out on top in this one.”
Greene was lead by freestyle sprinter Julia Arboit. Arboit was a winner in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.
Norwich is at Johnson City Tuesday and visits Windsor Friday.

Greene beaten in tourney final
GREENE - Coming off a thrilling victory over Windsor in Friday’s semifinal game, the Trojans were unable to sustain the momentum in the title game losing to Susquehanna Valley Saturday night, 4-1.
The Sabers built a 3-0 halftime lead getting two goals from Jordyn Williams in the first six minutes of action, and a third goal from Torriana Graham with 1:47 left in the first half.
Greene closed the deficit to two when Julia Beth Taft tallied off a Paige Wilcox feed, but failed to score again as Sus Valley added an insurance tally.
“Susquehanna Valley has a very skilled team with good passing and speed,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “It took us a little bit of time to settle in, and they were able to score early goals on us. After that, we were able to contain them a little better and create some opportunities to score ourselves.”
In Friday’s contest with Windsor, regulation play ended with the two teams deadlocked at 1-1. Windsor gained the advantage scoring in the first overtime, but an unassisted goal by Wilcox one minute into the second overtime forged the tie.
In the penalty kick shootout, Greene was successful on all four of its attempts, while Windsor missed two shots that were not on goal. Wilcox had Greene’s goal in regulation scoring in the second half.
“It was an exciting game from start to finish, and both teams played well,” Stone said of the win over Windsor.
Greene’s Wilcox, Morgan Hurlburt, and Sierra Stoppkotte were selected to the all-tournament team.
