OV coach has upper hand over former teammate

Otselic Valley 1, Oxford 0
OXFORD – In a battle of coaches who were high school soccer teammates, Otselic Valley head coach Jake Preston had the upper hand on Oxford’s Matt Dorman as the Vikings used a single goal in the first half to prevail in a non-league matchup Monday.
Dorman and Preston played high school soccer together at Cincinnatus, and arranged this non-league matchup as a fun reunion in a competitive situation. “It was a tough one to lose, but a lot of fun,” Dorman said. “Our guys moved the ball well today and had some shots. It was a good change of pace.”
OV’s tally came midway through the first half after a failed clear attempt by the Oxford defense. Janzen Waltz collected the loose ball for the Vikings, and scored unassisted.
Oxford controlled play the last 10 minutes of the game pressuring in OV’s defensive zone. A couple of nice scoring opportunities were turned away by the Vikings and goalie Jon Liuzzo. “It was exciting near their end, and their defense did a good job of stopping us,” Dorman said.
Oxford plays at Norwich today.

Greene 1, Delhi 0
GREENE - While the goals aren’t coming as frequently for Greene’s Paige Wilcox this season, it may be a matter of time before she breaks out, and her tally in Monday’s victory over Delhi gave her club its second win in four starts.
Janelle Milk crossed a pass from the left side to the top of 18-yard box, and Wilcox connected with the back of the net with 6:52 left.
Wilcox had a number of close calls on shots that were just off the mark or were saved by Delhi’s keeper, said Greene coach Brandy Stone. Trojans goalie Lindsey Brown made five saves for the shutout.

Field Hockey

Clinton 3, Sherburne-Earlville 0
SHERBURNE – A slow start out of the gate hurt Sherburne-Earlville Monday against visiting Clinton.
The visitor’s Rylee Meelan and Anna Femia scored goals in the first six minutes of the game to put the Marauders on their heels. The score remained at 2-0 until a meaningless tally with 17 seconds left in the contest. “We played much better in the second half, we just needed to do it sooner,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman.
The Marauders (1-2) had 10 of their penalty corners in the second half, but finished with just four shots on goal. Clinton keeper Bailey Bach turned aside four shots for the shutout. “We were kind of hanging back on the corners and had that mentality where we didn’t want to make a mistake,” Cooman said. “We needed to be more aggressive.”
S-E hosts Oneida Friday.
