Cyclones sweep archrivals Oneida, Camden
NORWICH – The Norwich Cyclones’ Pop Warner teams swept archrivals Oneida and Camden, Sunday at Alumni Field.
The Cyclones “B” team opened its season with a resounding 26-0 win over the Oneida Indians. Elijah Rodriguez opened scoring in the second stanza with a four-yard touchdown and added a five-yard TD in the fourth. Zachary Mills had a pair of TDs – a 15-yard run in the second and a three-yard run for a touchdown in the third. Jacob Davis added a point-after touchdown and a two-point kick in the third. Noah Bufalini, Collin Montgomery, and Davis rushed for good yardage as well.
On defense, fumble recoveries by Davis and Shane Lawrence stopped Oneida’s offense. Davis and Bufalini lead the “D,” with David Berger, Lawrence, Rodriguez, Brayden Supensky playing good defense as well.
The Cyclones “C” team stopped the Camden Blue Devils 21-0. Andrew Mullen opened the scoring in the first with a three-yard TD run. Dante Geislinger added a one-yard touchdown in the second. Ayden John-Lorimer added a pair of P.A.T. pass receptions from Michael Squires for a 14-0 halftime lead.
Cameron Byrne led all Cyclones rushers, and added a 19-yard touchdown run in the third, with Troy Spratley adding the P.A.T.
Spratley, Squires, Byrne, Griffin Mills, Mullen, Jared Houck, Tyler Rice, and Izaiah Caballero led the stingy Cyclones defense.
The Cyclones’ A team finished the perfect day downing Camden, 35-6.
The Cyclones had a blistering first quarter, leading 23-0 on just eight carries. Zack Race opened the scoring only 1:45 into the first with a seven-yard TD run. Drew Walsh added a 16-yard TD and receiver DaShawn King added a 28-yard score on an end-around. Cameron Ivan kicked two, two-point, P.A.T.s, with Jon “Bone” Merrill adding a one-point conversion run.
Merrill excited the home crowd with an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown, giving the Cyclones a 29-0 halftime lead.
The starting offense and defense had only one play in the second half – a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Drew Walsh.The Cyclones’ defense of Walsh, Cristobal Cabellero, Jacob Lamb, Joshua Mioduszewski, Austin Foulds, and Anthony Little, as well as both of the entire defensive units, held Camden in check. Grant Wessels had a fumble recovery, setting up the first Cyclone score at the 16. King had a fumble recovery as well, while Brad Walley added an interception.
The Cyclones “D” team had a controlled scrimmage with Camden, and the Cyclones prevailed.
The Cyclones A team has a bye this weekend, with the D, C, and B teams playing at Cazenovia with games at 10 a.m. 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. respectively.
