G-MU captures New York Pizzeria Tournament

NEW BERLIN - G-MU recorded a pair of shutout victories, the latter win over B-G in the championship game of the New York Pizzeria Tournament Saturday at Unadilla Valley High School.
After a scoreless first half and nearly a scoreless second half with the Bobcats, G-MU broke the ice with 3:20 left in regulation. Tournament MVP Makenzie Talbot beat a B-G defender to the right corner, and hit a crossing pass to Autumn Butler, who tapped it into the net. Following the go-ahead goal, the Raiders’ defense clamped down to not allow B-G a shot the rest of the way.
“These girls played with so much heart and everyone on the field did their part and so much more,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole. “It was a great win for them.”
Unadilla Valley rebounded from a first-round loss to Bainbridge-Guilford to beat Walton 4-3 in the consolation game. With the contest tied and headed toward overtime, Taylor Davis scored with 10 seconds left off a cross from Hunter Lakin.
Davis had two goals in the game, while Lakin and Sierra Badger added goals.
Friday, Tayler Nichols had two first-half goals for the Raiders to fuel the offensive attack, and Talbot added an insurance goal in the second half in a 3-0 victory over Walton. Talbot and Elaina Palada were also credited with assists.

FENTON - Norwich overcame a pair of second-half deficits to force a tie with Chenango Valley Friday afternoon.
Vicky Estell scored unassisted for Norwich in the first half to give NHS the short-lived lead. CV rallied, and took a 2-1 lead early in the second half. Alyssa Welch tied the game for Norwich connecting on a a direct kick, and after the Warriors once again assumed the advantage, sophomore Shelby Benjamin knotted the game with another successful direct kick. “There were a few shaky moments toward the end, but Kassidy Seary (Norwich goalie) was amazing for us,” said Norwich coach Felicia Tynan. “This is a step in the right direction, and we were passing and looking for each other. We weren’t able to practice the two days leading up to the game, but we executed the things in the game that I wanted to work on in practice.”
Norwich plays Seton Catholic Central Tuesday.
Clinton 2, Sherburne-Earlville 1
CLINTON – Clinton quickly answered Sherburne-Earlville’s tying goal in one-goal victory over the Marauders Friday.
Savannah Irwin scored the Marauders’ lone goal about 30 minutes into the second half. Clinton’s go-ahead goal occurred less than a minute after Irwin’s tally.
“We dictated the second half, but couldn’t finish in the final third and didn’t take a whole lot of shots,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis.

Unadilla Valley 3, Sidney 1
NEW BERLIN - Unadilla Valley lost its opening game to Sidney, but came on strong the rest of the way beating the Warriors in four games Friday, 17-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-21.
Mariah Bodie had a team-high six kills for the Storm, who improved to 4-1 on the season. Shannon McIntyre and Nicole Mackey shared the lead in assists with seven apiece, and Haley Benson served a team-high seven aces. UV is at Delhi Tuesday.

The Bobcats’ Morgan Bullis had nine kills, eight assists, and three blocks to lead the way. Rebecca Reyes added four assists, while Alissa Rivera picked up two kills and two aces.
Walton was led by Alyna Haywood, who had five aces and three digs.
Harpursville 3, Oxford 0
HARPURSVILLE - Unbeaten Harpursville swept three games for Oxford Friday, 25-14, 25-15, 25-5 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Erika Whitney had 11 aces for the Hornets, Madison Paugh led with eight kills, and Megan Matts dished out 15 assists.
Taylor Chapman had seven digs for Oxford.

NORWICH – Kyle Hanvey had a hat trick for Bainbridge-Guilford, who beat the Tornado for the second time this season.
Daniel Norris, Jake Louzzo, and Thomas Petrutoni also had goals for the Bobcats. Killian Benedict tallied for Norwich, his first varsity goal, after a misplay in the B-G defensive zone. “We are moving the ball better, but we still have a ways to go,” said Norwich coach Scottie Decker.

Nate Whitehill and Galen Wind had two goals apiece for the Raiders, and Chris Cole tallied his first varsity goal. Whitehill scored twice in the first half helping his team to a 3-0 halftime lead. “We’ve had some problems with the offense, but we’ve been working on that end quite a bit in practice, and it came together really well,” said G-MU coach Steve Antczak.

CHITTENANGO – Ian Benedict and Abby Ryan turned in the best performances for Sherburne-Earlville’s cross country team at Saturday’s Chittenango Invitational.
Benedict, running a field of 279 boys, finished 99th with a time of 19:37 over the 3.1-mile course. Ryan, one of two S-E girls, timed 31:04.
“The boys were all pleased with their performances and are looking forward to making improvements throughout the season,” said S-E coach Anne Geary.
S-E is at Cooperstown Wednesday.

FENTON – Norwich’s boys team, missing its top two runners, placed 19th out of 27 teams at the MacDaniel-Baxter Invitational, hosted by Chenango Valley.
Frank Garcia led the NHS contingent timing 19:23 to place 42nd out of 146 runners.
The NHS girls fielded a complete unit, and placed 15th overall. Martha Clemens was 61st out of 112 runners timing 24:42, while Kristen Slate was 66th clocking 25 minutes flat. Below are Norwich results:
