Marauders maul Tully in second straight shutout win

Football

Sherburne-Earlville 34, Tully 0
SHERBURNE – How much better will the Marauders be this season when their head coach, after another shutout win, was not entirely pleased with the performance?
“To be honest, we were a little sloppy, and we had a lot of penalties that would have killed us in other games,” said Marauders coach Mike Jasper.
Senior Austin Jasper had TD runs of one and five yards giving S-E a 13-0 halftime lead. That margin stood until the fourth quarter when the Marauders blew the game open. Brodie Roebuck scored on an 18-yard dash, and Brady Sopchak accounted for the final two touchdowns with jaunts of 15 and 13 yards.
S-E’s defense remained stout holding Tully to 55 yards of total offense. Touted Tully running back Joe Warner was bottled up finishing with just seven yards on the ground. “We’re happy with the shutout, and although it was a non-league game, it was important for us to focus against a better team,” Jasper said. “We had a bit of adversity this week at school (a bomb scare and excessive heat) where we couldn’t practice a couple of days. Those things had us a little out of sync. We didn’t let that become too much of a distraction, and we got back to our identity in the fourth quarter.”
S-E returns to league play this Friday when it travels to Mt. Markham.

Greene 16, Delhi 14
GREENE – With a second victory this season beginning to slip away, Greene came up with a big special teams play to turn the tide back in its favor in Friday’s victory over Delhi.
Delhi erased a 10-0 Trojans lead with a pair of Brian Ingram TD runs, the latter giving the Bulldogs a four-point lead with 10 minutes left in the game.
Greene was forced to punt on its next possession, but Delhi fumbled on the punt return, and Tyler Dickman recovered the ball for the Trojans. Two plays later, Joe Beckwith hit Shawn Brigham on a 29-yard TD pass for the go-ahead and winning points.
Greene battled adversity throughout the game, and had a couple more hurdles to clear before salting the win away. Dickman had a tackle for a loss to force a fourth-and-eight, and Alex Csigi sniffed out a Delhi screen pass tackling running back Noah DeDominics to force an exchange of downs. “That solo tackle by Csigi, if he doesn’t make it, DeDominics may have taken that all the way for a touchdown,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “I’m so proud of these kids...it was a game where we needed to make plays, and we did.”
Greene built its lead early driving for a score on its first possession. Dickman scored on a 27-yard TD run, and kicker Wyatt Johns connected on a 22-yard field goal for the 10-point lead.
Underclassman Tristan Carter had a 67-yard run and led the Trojans’ running game with 93 yards. Brendan Wheeler finished with a team-high 11 tackles, and Dickman had nine tackles to go with the aforementioned fumble recovery.
Greene is at Newark Valley Saturday.

Groton 36, Bainbridge-Guilford 6
BAINBRIDGE – B-G tried to surprise Groton at the outset, and the Indians made the home club pay.
The Bobcats’ tried – and failed – executing an onside kick to start the game. Groton recovered the ball at its 49, and running back Zeke Wright scored on a 51-yard TD run on his team’s first offensive play to set the tone for the game.
Wright had two more rushing scores in the first quarter and finished with 160 yards on 14 carries. “Wright is the real deal and he’s a heck of a back,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “They were just better than us up front and a physical team.”
The Bobcats allowed just one Groton score in the second half and had a four-yard TD run from Pedro Aparicio in the fourth to break up the shutout. Four lost fumbles, though, proved costly, Mattingly said. “When you compete against the good teams, you just can’t turn it over that many times,” the B-G coach said. “What I did like is that we did not quit in the second half, and we played more physical. We’re making some gains and improving, and that’s what we’ll need to do this week against Deposit-Hancock.”
Aparicio had 79 yards rushing to lead the B-G offense.

Walton 30, Oxford 6
WALTON – Oxford struggled to run the ball, and just wasn’t effective enough in the passing game as Walton cruised to a 24-point victory over the Blackhawks Saturday afternoon.
Christian Rutherford ran for 103 yards and a first-period score to lead the Walton attack. Austin Kilmer added a 44-yard punt return TD that lifted the host Warriors to a 14-point halftime advantage.
Defensively, though, Walton overloaded the line of scrimmage making it difficult for the Blackhawks to find any seams. “They did some things we didn’t really expect, and brought more people (on defense) than we could block,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton. “We pride ourselves on being able to throw the ball, and we just didn’t get it done.”
Walton stretched its lead to three scores on Trevor Zandt’s 19-yard TD pass to Matt Sinistore early in the third. Zandt completed just three passes, but they covered 93 yards. The TD toss, though, came after a blown coverage, Dayton said.
Oxford responded with its lone score later in the quarter when quarterback Angelo Gonzalez hit paydirt on a 16-yard keeper. “Defending Walton, we knew they would get some yards and some first downs,” Dayton said. “What we can’t have are the critical penalties on third down, the fumbles (three), and the missed assignments. Those are the things we’re doing right now, and we can’t have that next week if we want to be a playoff team.”
Oxford hosts Sidney Friday night. During halftime of the game, the field will be renamed in honor of longtime head football coach, Tony Abbott.

Whitney Point 44, Unadilla Valley 0
WHITNEY POINT – After a narrow loss to Walton a week ago, Whitney Point proved it could be a team to contend with in Class C this season.
The Golden Eagles ran for 329 yards, and held the Storm to just 20 yards of total offense in Saturday’s shutout victory.
Jake Lynch ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns to lead Whitney Point. Lynch had a 38-yard caper in the first quarter, and a 30-yard TD tote in the second to help the host club build a 28-0 lead.
“We really weren’t able to generate much of anything offensively,” said UV coach Mark Segina. “They were beating us off the ball, and it was one of those things where you have a young team, things weren’t going well, and things just snowballed.”
Segina was happy with the defensive performances of Chris Bateman, Richie Conklin, and Steve Osborne. However, Whitney Point continually came up with the right play at the right time. “We’d hold them on first and second down, then we’d miss a tackle or they would break a long one,” Segina said. “That is how the day went for us.”
Unadilla Valley faces Delhi this week.
