Norwich netters one point out of first place

Girls’ Tennis

OWEGO – All four of Norwich’s entries in the Class B Tennis Tournament won at least one match, and the Tornado doubles team of Jennifer Borfitz and Breanna Cashman advanced to the doubles finals after Thursday’s opening day.
Norwich is just one point out of first place behind first-place Seton Catholic Central. “We were the only team in the tournament that had each of its players win at least one match,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “This really has been a team effort so far.”
Borfitz and Cashman won their quarterfinals and semifinals matches in straight sets, and play for the title today at 3:30 p.m. against Owego’s Coco Heitmann and Talia Lewis. Also alive is freshman Makenzie Maynard, who plays for third place in the singles competition. Maynard easily won her first two matches before falling to Abby Galyon of Seton Catholic Central in the semifinals. Maynard, the third seed, plays Seton’s Maya Haykel in the consolation finals today as well. “We played really good tennis right from the beginning, and that why we are where we are,” Stewart said.
Also picking up first-round wins were Caroline Stewart in singles and the doubles team of Stef Elder and Cohley Acenowr. Stewart and the doubles pair fell in the quarterfinals.
