Oxford girls close with a victory; Greene’s Wilcox scores five goals

OXFORD – It was better late than never for Oxford Wednesday night as the Blackhawks won their first game in the season finale.
After playing to a scoreless tie through regulation, Oxford capitalized on its best opportunity of the game with 2:20 left in the first overtime. After an initial cornerkick was cleared back to the outside, a re-entry pass into the 18-yard box led to a scramble and Andi DeStefano’s winning goal.
The victory was preserved by the Oxford defense and goalie Rachel Seiler, who made 17 saves in the shutout. “Defensively, the kids played well and Rachel made a lot of good saves for us,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle.

GREENE – Greene senior Paige Wilcox had her breakout game this season, and it came at the perfect time Wednesday against visiting Sidney.
Wilcox scored five goals the last with 6:24 left to give her club the lead for good. Wilcox snapped a 1-1 tie two minutes into the second half, and a big save by Trojans goalie Lindsey Brown helped maintain the lead. Brown made a diving stop of a Sidney penalty kick, a tally that may have led to an overtime contest.
“It was definitely back and forth the entire game,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone.
The Trojans (8-5-1) are idle until the Section IV playoffs next week.

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville produced its most prolific offensive performance of the season Tuesday night in routing visiting Waterville.
Mikayla Solloway had a hat trick for the Marauders with two of those tallies coming in a five-goal second half. Sarah Cole and defender Amanda Hodge also scored a pair of goals in the win, and Gemma Godfrey had the initial goal of the game 20:32 into play.
“It was an exciting game with a lot of goal-scoring opportunities,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis. “We are really starting to anticipate the flow of the game and know where each other is.”
S-E plays at Holland Patent Thursday.

SIDNEY – Norwich finished on the upswing Wednesday at Sidney picking up its third win.
Killian Benedict chipped a left-footed shot over the Sidney defense for the opening goal at 17:10 of the first half, and Curtis Woodard added an insurance goal with 22 minutes remaining in the second half. Both goals were assisted by Chris Trevisani, and goalie Keegan Prime made six saves for his first shutout.
“We are hoping to get one more game, but if this is the end of the season, we certainly ended on a high note,” said Norwich assistant coach Adam Sprague. “It was probably the best we have played all season.”

AFTON – Afton rallied from a halftime deficit to pick up its second win in Wednesday’s season finale.
Conor Graven-Briggs scored the tying goal with 13 minutes left after a pass from Joe DeVona. Briggs netted with winner with two minutes left following a rebound.
“We’ve been turning it up in the second half, we just have to figure out a way to come out stronger and play a full 80 minutes,” said Afton coach Todd Dancesia.
Oxford took a one-goal halftime lead on Jeff Lawton’s tally off a Matt Moore feed.
Afton (2-13-1) finished the season with a program-record 21 goals, and Briggs, a sophomore, set an Afton single-season scoring mark with 13 goals.

The Marauders drew within 2-1 at the 26:40 mark of the second half on well executed penalty corner. Taylor Jordan scored on a pass from Megan Rodman. Welch scored seven minutes later, then added goals with 11 and eight minutes remaining.
S-E plays at Mount Markham Friday. A victory for the Marauders clinches a Section III postseason berth.

Emily Greenwood had five kills for Afton (2-13).

Kailey Yanusas, Julia Arboit, and Chelsea Carlson all had four total victories, and Taylor Wahlers compiled a three-win day. The Trojans won 11 of 12 events, and swept the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 backstroke.
Sherburne-Earlville’s lone victory came from Liz Bachman, who captured the 100 breaststroke.
Greene is idle until an Oct. 25 road date with Union-Endicott.
