Parents, faculty meet to discuss PTCT
NORWICH – On Monday, Nov. 4, concerned parents and faculty alike gathered to discuss the future of the newly established Purple Tornado Community Team (PTCT).
PTCT President Joanne Stafford addressed attendants with a presentation intended to create discussion and a brainstorming of ideas on how the group could raise funding as quickly as possible.
"We've started out small, but we really want to push forward and move on with building this new organization into a success for the students,” Stafford said. “I have been encouraged by a number of parents and faculty to run with this idea.”
Stafford explained that the group – formerly the Norwich City School District's PTA – would be dissolving its membership with the PTA and how it would affect the functionality of its operation.
One of the most substantial changes between the PTA and PTCT is the absence of regulatory guidelines that the new, local organization will have to abide by, which in turn, allows the PTCT more freedom to tailor the day-to-day operations as needed.
Also, with the enactment of the new PTCT, dues will not be collected for membership as was the case for the former PTA, which according to Stafford, will make community involvement more likely.
“With the PTCT, we will not have the bylaws or membership requirements of the PTA," Stafford said. "We are starting new so our financial balances are low and we will continually evaluate our roles and procedures and make changes as they are needed.”
“The main purpose of the PTCT is to come together collectively as individuals (representation from all four schools) and fundraise to bring art and educational programs that might not otherwise be provided to our students as well as events, scholarships and supplies,” Stafford said.
Ideas for new fundraising ideas ranged from book fairs that will expand to the middle school and high school levels (something that has not been offered in over a decade) to the The Holiday Shoppe, an event sponsored by the PTCT that gives parents time to shop for their children at the book fair while students have a chance to buy holiday gifts for parents and family at a separate location. Buying for parents and family is something that gives students a sense of accomplishment and pride, Stafford said.
The Holiday Shoppe will be held from 5-7 p.m. Dec.13 and 9 a.m. to noon on Dec.14 at Perry Browne Intermediate School.
“I really want this community to have a positive outlook on something that concerns our schools," Stafford said. "There is so much we cannot control with state mandates and curriculum, and we want these kids to know we are not forgetting other aspects of their education that we can control."
Parents and members of the community wishing to volunteer for fundraisers or who may have suggestions for the PTCT should contact Stafford directly via email at jstafford@norwichcsd.org or by phone at 334-1600 ext. 3024.
