Fort Hill Legion to host New Year’s Celebration

OXFORD – ‘Tis the day after Christmas, and everyone knows what that means... setting up your plans for ringing in the new year. The Fort Hill American Legion Auxiliary of Oxford has prepared an exciting and memorable night of socializing this year, and everyone is invited to attend.
With appetizers starting at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, party goers can expect a night full of entertainment, celebration, great food and drinks at the Fort Hill American Legion Post, 17 So. Washington Ave., Oxford.
During the early portion of the evening, the Legion has planned a special "Thank You” to honor veterans with a hors d'oeuvres and cocktail hour for Post 376 Legionnaires who have received a special invitation to attend the pre-celebration. Veterans and Legionaries will also have the opportunity to pose for a professional photograph.
“Although I am president of Unit 376, Teri Webb-van Almen, our secretary, is chairing this committee event and she has been doing a fantastic job at planning and organizing the event,” said Fort Hill American Legion Axillary President Jeanie Petersen. “Teri, with the assistance of Desseray Wallace, Cindy Hubschmitt, Mickey Castaldy, and Louise Spicer have spent a great deal of time putting the together and we have many activities planned.”
Starting at 9:30 and continuing until 11 p.m., the celebration will include an elaborate all-you-can-eat buffet with shrimp, beef brisket, and spiral cut ham, as well as door prize giveaways, raffle baskets that include gift certificates from local businesses such as Teasers and The Parsons Daughter, and various contests. A selection of desserts, including the ever popular gourmet filled and frosted cupcakes from Patty Izard Cakes in Oxford, will also be served. Open bar will run from 9 p.m. until midnight.
After a midnight champagne toast and balloon drop, the party will be kept alive into the night by Rhett Genung of RockStar DJ service, spinning an array of music from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.
According to Peterson, Participants can ensure a fun and safe celebration this New Year’s Eve as there will be plenty of designated drivers on hand to safely transport afterward.
Said Petersen, “We want everyone to have a great time and enjoy the evening to the fullest. But more importantly, we want everyone to be safe and get home without incident.”
The evenings' celebration serves as one of the largest American Legion Auxiliary fundraisers to benefit the mission of the American Legion Axillary (ALA). The ALA focuses their efforts on veterans, young people and Americanism in the community.
Locally, the Oxford ALA currently has more than 200 members, giving many volunteer hours to help the initiatives and programs of the Oxford Legion and the Oxford community.
“We will be donating 15 percent of the proceeds to the historic Oxford Post 376 Building Fund,” said Petersen.
Those attending are encouraged to use the event as an opportunity to “dress their best” at the semi-formal celebration, as photographers will be available throughout the evening.
The New Year’s event is open adults 21 and over only, and all-inclusive tickets are $40 per person ($30 for seniors) and available at the door or by calling 843-8166.
