Norwich offense heats up in rout of Blue Devils
Girls’ Basketball
NORWICH – While the weather outside dipped below zero Friday night, Norwich’s offense reached the lower 90s inside Jack Jones Gymnasium.
The Tornado scored their highest point total in at least 20 seasons as everyone on the roster found the scoring column in a 92-28 blowout of a young Chenango Forks club.
Down 4-2 to the Blue Devils less than 90 seconds in, the Purple Tornado’s relentless full-court pressure forced 10 Forks turnovers in the first quarter. Norwich went on a 16-0 run over a four-minute stretch of the first quarter to quickly pull away. That spurt was complemented by a 9-0 spurt in the second quarter and a 14-0 salvo in the third.
Jennifer Borfitz scored 19 points in the victory, reserve Caitlyn Brown hit four three-pointers on her way a career-high 14 points, Carin Kuhn netted 12, and Breanna Cashman had 10. The Norwich bench totaled 43 points to easily outdistance the Blue Devils’ collective output.
“We did a great job of finding the open man and knocking down shots,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett after the win. “We also did a much better job with receiving passes.”
Norwich’s junior varsity set the tone for prolific night of offense reaching 50 points by halftime in a 75-21 whitewashing. Bridget Murphy scored 21 points in the win, Gabby Mirabito had 12, and Macalyn Bonner 10.

Norwich 64, Chenango Valley 40
NORWICH – Norwich held Chenango Valley without a field goal in the first quarter, and doubled its halftime lead in the third quarter to pull away for its seventh straight win of the season Saturday.
The Warriors overcame a slow start stay within 11 at halftime, 34-23. The Norwich lead grew quickly, however, thanks to a full-court press that forced four CV turnovers in the first two minutes of the second half. Mike Sutton had two layups off turnovers, and Zan Stewart added a layup. Six Norwich players scored in a third quarter that left Norwich with a 53-31 advantage with eight minutes to play.
“January is the time when we will tell where we are going as a team,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “We’ve started well, but now we are getting into the strength of our schedule, and will have many tough games coming up.”
Norwich suffered some early foul trouble, but didn’t miss a beat. Jamison Luke came off the bench for five rebounds and three blocked shots, and Colin Stewart had nine points in a reserve role. Sutton led all Norwich players with 18 points and Zan Stewart added 10.
“Jamo and Colin showed the strength of our team,” Collier said. “When we have a starter or two out, we don’t miss a beat teamwise. “Matt Burke also shot the ball better tonight for us, and we shot better as a team.”
Norwich plays at once-beaten Owego on Tuesday.

Norwich third at Leo J. Sammon Tournament
ILION – In a matchup of perennial sectional champions, Norwich’s Tristan Rifanburg defeated Section III’s Laken Cook to help Norwich to a third-place finish at the Leo J. Sammon Tournament.
Rifanburg (138), unbeaten on the season, topped Cook of Central Valley Academy, 8-4. It was Cook’s first regular-season loss in two years and second finals loss to Rifanburg in this tournament.
“Those two have wrestled a bunch when they were younger,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch of Rifanburg’s matchup with Cook. “It was a good test (for Tristan) against a veteran who has been to states numerous times.”
Cook had two takedowns in the first period that were countered by a pair of Rifanburg escapes. From there, it was all Rifanburg, Hagenbuch said. “Tristan was going after him, and he was not content with an 8-4 decision,” Hagenbuch said.
Junior Frankie Garcia (152) also remained perfect this season rolling through his weight class. He pinned Gavin Goldsmith of CVA in 2:14 for the championship. Adding his first tournament title as a Norwich wrestler was Brad Chesebro, who won the 220-pound division with a third-period pin of South Lewis’ Thomas Randall.
Ty Rifanburg (99) placed second, while Dalen Geislinger (106) and Cole Rifanburg (120) added thirds.
Central Valley Academy (a merging of Ilion and Mohawk) easily won the team title with 283.5 points, Indian River polled 175 for second, Norwich racked up 164.5 points.
