Norwich officer completes Instructor Development course
DELHI – Nine-year Norwich City Police Department veteran Timothy Annesi has successfully completed the Police Instructor Development Course held in Sanford Hall at SUNY Delhi.
According to Delhi Police Captain James H. Smalls, the course is 64 hours in length and certifies officers to be New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services General Topics Police Instructors. Annesi will now be able to instruct at police academys as well as in in-service training courses.
“Training is very important,” said Norwich City Police Chief Joseph Angelino. “For all the officers here, any training pays dividends to the community.”
Angelino added this particular course was a public speaking training course. NPD officers who are certified are available for speaking engagements on various topics for the public.
“Officers routinely go to schools, driver’s education programs, community groups, service clubs, and numerous other groups to speak,” said Angelino. As an example, Halloween safety and tips from trained officers are offered to parents and children annually, he said.
Annesi had said officers from around the region attended the class in Delhi.
“Approximately half of the department has gone to this course,” said Angelino. “It helps get people comfortable speaking in public, which is important.”
The course was co-sponsored by the Delhi Police Department and the University Police Department at Delhi. The particular course is available to police and peace officers with at least three years of experience to certify them as General Topics Police Instructors.
Said Angelino, “It’s great to get the officers certified in various aspects, and it is very important to be able to engage with the community at numerous events.”
