Norwich 77, Seton Catholic Central 52
BINGHAMTON – Norwich turned up the offense to counter Seton Catholic Central’s strong start Wednesday.
Senior Storm Cook poured in a career-high 25 points, and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Purple Tornado raised their unbeaten record to 9-0.
“Seton is not as good as it has been in the past, but their home court is a tough place to play, and they’re still a tough out,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “They’ve been competitive with everybody, and we’re happy to get out of there with the win.”
Cook was particularly effective in the second half scoring 15 of his points including 10 in the fourth quarter. Michael Sutton added 12 points and 10 assists, and Zan Stewart scored 10.
Norwich traded leads with the Saints early in the game, but took the lead for good three minutes into the second quarter, 18-17, on Sutton’s layup. Reserves Chris Trevisani and Colin Stewart ignited the Tornado attack, one in which Norwich was able to extend its lead to nine points at the half and to 15 points in the third quarter. Seven separate NHS players scored in the third in a example of the team’s depth and scoring balance. Cook even added a pair of three-pointers to complement his inside game.
“Their defense was sucking in (against our dribble drives), and Storm was cleaning up,” Collier said. “Michael Sutton and Storm played really well for us tonight. It was solid team performance.”
Norwich’s junior varsity improved to 8-1 on the season beating the Saints, 70-49. Sophomore Jake Walsh led with 19 points, nine assists, and seven steals. Matt Parella scored 16 points, and Jordan Vinal posted a line of 11 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
