Knights of Columbus organize
NORWICH – On the 41st anniversary of Roe v Wade, one of the most contentious Supreme Court hearings in American history, hundreds of thousands of pro life activists from around the country will orgnize a series of peaceful protests on Capital Hill during the annual March for Life.
Since the ruling of Roe v Wade made abortion legal in the United States in 1973, millions have walked in the March for Life in protest of abortion and related legislation. Although the outcome of Roe V Wades still stands, the goal is to one day overturn the court’s ruling, said Norwich Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Jim Reynolds, and give millions a chance at life.
On Jan. 21, the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a one-day bus trip for anyone wishing to be part of the movement. The bus will leave from the St. Batholomew’s Catholic Church parking lot for Washington D.C. at 11 p.m. on Tuesday before arriving on the National Mall for the March for Life. It will return to Norwich at 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
“This is the 12th year we have had a bus go down from Norwich,” Reynolds said, adding the event each year is “a life changing experience.”
“And it’s not just people from Norwich. We have (participants) from surrounding counties, too,” he said.
Cost of the trip is $25 for students, $50 for adults and $40 for seniors. Additional costst of approximately $35 are needed to cover metro train transportation, breakfast, lunch, and a buffet dinner. Knights of Columbus may offer financial assistance if needed.
While nearly half a million people participate in the event each year, the turnout from the Norwich area is never what’s expected, Reynolds pointed out. He said it’s important to get the word out to everyone and get more young people involved. “I’m shocked the bus isn’t filled every year,” he said. “We especially want youth. It’s all about getting youth down there because that’s our future.”
In addition to the March for Life, trip highlights will include Mass at the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, and a visit to the Holy Land Shrine. All are welcome, said Reynolds.
“This is a chance of educating people on the issue. Education is key to everything,” he said. “We believe life begins at conception and that God gives us this life to live. We don’t have the right to cut it short.”
Only 47 seats are available on the bus trip to Washington. The Knights of Columbus is also open to donations from people who would like to help with the cause but are not available to go on the trip. Checks should be payable to the Knights of Columbus no. 211 with “March for Life” written in the memo.
For reservations or more information, contact Reynolds with the Knights of Columbus Council 211 in Norwich at 607-316-5731, or via email at jnrenergy526@gmail.com.
