Gladiator members selected for national NYS wrestling team

BAINBRIDGE – The Gladiators School of Wrestling Club, a private wrestling club located in Bainbridge, announced that nine members of the roste have been selected to the National NYWAY state team.
The team will be traveling to the University of Ohio in Columbus on Feb. 15-17 to compete at the 2014 NUWAY National Duals. The NUWAY National Duals are often regarded as one of the toughest national dual tournaments in the country because of its caliber of competition. The dual meet event often features handpicked all-star teams from across the country. This will also kick off the NCAA National Duals. The youth will be wrestling right next to some of the greatest D-1 wrestlers in the nation.
NYWAY has selected wrestlers from across the state to fill five divisions that will be competing. Selection for the team was based on results of Kickoff tournaments and previous NYWAY Championships. The five division are 8-and-under, 10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and -under and a 14-and-under all girls team. NYWAY has fielded all five divisions. Selected from the Gladiators lineup are Trevor Thayer (Otego) at 46 pounds;, Max Morris (Norwich) at 55 pounds; and TJ O’Connor (Otego) at 64 pounds. All three will be on the 8-and-under team.
On the 10-and-under team are Troy Spratley (Bainbridge) at 70 pounds; Joseph Marvin (Norwich) at 75 pounds and Tyler Rice (Norwich) at 105 pounds.
Named to the 12-and-under team were Elijah Rodriguez (Norwich) at 80 pounds and Dante Geislinger (Norwich) at 65 pounds. Alexis Thayer at 60 pounds. has been selected as a team member for the all-girls 14-and-under team. “This is a chance of a lifetime for these kids and a great opportunity to see the highest level of competition,” said Gladiators head coach Stephen Spratley. Spratley was also selected to assist on the coaching staff on the 8-and-under team.
Other than the entry fee that is funded by NYWAY the trip will be self-funded. The Gladiators team will be having a bake sale and bottle and can drive on Feb. 9 to help with the cost of the trip. They will be in Sidney at the K-Mart; and Norwich Walmart along with Otego’s Walmart locations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you would like to arrange a bottle and can pick up please contact Deann Washer at 607-895-6434 or Jennifer Rice at 607-244-9881.
