Jasper signs deal with Tiffin
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville senior Austin Jasper signed a letter of intent to attend Tiffin University, a Division II school that competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Tiffin, located in Ohio, competes in one of the most competitive NCAA Division II conferences in the country. Current NFL starters, Chris Ivory of the New York Jets, and Nate Washington of the Tennessee Titans, played at Tiffin. "Austin realizes he will need to continue with his work ethic and competitive spirit as he adjusts to everything at the next level," said S-E head football coach and Austin's father, Mike Jasper. "When it came down to making his decision, I think Tiffin was just the right fit for what he wanted in both a football program and academically."
Jasper was a dual threat for the Marauders leading the team in tackles on defense the past three seasons, and also leading the offense his senior season in receiving and touchdowns. Jasper was a three-time all-state selection at linebacker, and was named to the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C first team this past season.
"We are very excited to see someone from our program secure a scholarship toward their athletic and academic career," Coach Jasper said. "It is very competitive to secure scholarships, and for someone from a program our size to achieve this is great for S-E football."
Austin Jasper is the first S-E football player to earn a football scholarship since the school moved to Section III in 2002.

Bonney inks scholarship with BU
NORWICH – The future is bright for Norwich senior Brooke Bonney, who is still a bit of a tyro in track and field circles.
Bonney, Norwich’s school record-holder in the discus and a two-time state place finisher in the shot put, signed a letter of intent to attend Binghamton University Monday afternoon at Norwich High School.
"The good thing for Brooke is that Binghamton was her number one choice academically as well," said Norwich head track and field coach, Shaun Horan. "Brooke has been talking with the coach there for some time, and this is exciting for her. She definitely has the grades to be successful there."
Bonney never competed in track and field until joining the indoor track and field team her sophomore year. After showing promise during the winter, Bonney excelled in the spring finishing among the top six shot-putters in the state in Division II.
As a junior, Bonney matched her shot put performance of the previous year, while also showing rapid improvement in the discus. She exceeded 122 feet to break the school record, and earn a spot on Section IV's state team.
"I think (Binghamton) sees a lot of potential in Brooke," Horan said. "She's an impressive lifter, and with her speed and personality, she should be able to compete on the Division I level."

Edwards, Bonney earn awards
CANTON – St. Lawrence freshman, Kyle Edwards (Norwich, Norwich H.S), won the Liberty League Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week award for the fourth time this season.
This past weekend, Edwards averaged 17.5 points and five assists as St. Lawrence split games with Union and RPI. Edwards had a career-high 21 points and four assists against Union, and followed that up with 14 points and a season-high six assists in a win over RPI.
Richie Bonney (Norwich, Norwich H.S.), a senior basketball player at Hobart, was named the Liberty League Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Bonney led the Statesmen to three wins last week averaging 19.3 points and 12 rebounds.
Bonney's three-point play at RIT last Tuesday gave his club a 77-75 victory. In Friday's 67-58 win over Bard, Bonney had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and he completed the week with his 17th double-double of the season scoring 23 points and grabbing 16 boards in a 68-52 victory over Vassar.
