Wood stove ignites charges

AFTON – An Afton woman has been charged with two count of endangering the welfare of a child after police discovered a potentially dangerous wood stove in her home.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Messina initially responded to complaints of loose dogs around the residence of 21-year-old Jessica Levesque of Afton. During the search for the dogs, the deputy on call heard an infant crying within the home.

After numerous attempts to get someone to answer the door, he entered the residence where he found Lavesque and two infants, both within feet of what the deputy said was a burning piece of wood hanging from the stove. The Sheriff's report also describes the stove as not having an adequate door to contain the fire.
