NORWICH – Happy anniversary to the City of Norwich.

Today, March 12, 2014, marks 100 years since the New York State legislature first recognized the Village of Norwich as a city. The designation was given after members of the state senate and assembly passed the Norwich Charter Bill, later signed by then state Governor Martin Glynn.

The law became effective immediately. The President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Norwich were renamed “Mayor” and “Aldermen” under the newly signed charter. Those positions were decided by voters for the first time in November, 1914, and elected officials took office under the new charter for the City of Norwich the following January.

Present Mayor Joseph Maiurano issued a proclamation on behalf of the city this morning in honor of the occasion.
