Soup's on
NORWICH – The upcoming weekend in Norwich is promising to be full of exciting events for families across the county to get out and break the monotony of winter's cabin fever and enjoy some of the predicted warmer weather that nature has on tap. No excuses this weekend to hold down the couch, there's plenty to do out there in the community, most for a good cause.
In addition to the St. Patrick's holiday kick off at the Blarney Stone Pub featuring The Ryan Clan along with the pub's obligatory offering of corned beef and cabbage – and the St. Baldrick's event at The American Legion – back by popular demand is the popular soup tasting fundraiser dubbed “Souper Bowl.”
The third-annual event will once again be held at the Norwich Family YMCA with the goal of raising both awareness and funds to benefit the Chenango County chapter of Habitat For Humanity.
From at 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, more than 25 Chenango County restaurants will present to the masses a donated gallon of their best soup to support Chenango County Habitat for Humanity’s Souper Bowl.
Far from an ordinary affair, The CCHH Souper Bowl is an experience that one has to attend to fully grasp. For a modest admission fee of $6, foodies are invited from across the county come experience a “taste of Chenango” and to vote for their favorite contestant offering. Those looking to save a little coin are encouraged to purchase thier admission tickets before the date at the discounted rate of $5 at the Norwich family YMCA, Oxford NBT Bank, Bainbridge Sidney Federal Credit Union (SFCU) and Gilligan’s in Sherburne.
“We give you a spoon - you do the tasting.” – Along with the dozens of unique hot – and maybe cold (Gazpacho, anyone?) – all you can eat soups, tasters can enjoy a selection of breads donated by La Maison Blanche Bakery Café of Norwich. The events serves as an opportunity for the community to discover what area restaurants have to offer in terms of quality and flavor and is a great tool for planning a wedding reception or a catered event.
This year’s Souper Bowl will feature the allurement of donated gift baskets during an auction. Baskets from last year's event featured store gift items, plants, crafts and certificates donated by private individuals and area businesses.
A little friendly competition promises to keep area chefs on their toes, and the voice of the community will again dictate who's soup will reign victorious. After soup-tasting, each participant places a ticket at the soup of his or her choice. The restaurant with the most “people’s choice” tickets will receive first, second and third-place awards.
Every participating restaurant will have identifying information placed near its contribution indicating its name, location, and type of soup. Tasters take notes as they pass through the event and then cast vote for the best soup.
This year's venerated "people's choice" awards will be designed and created by Oxford artist, John Knapp, and are sure to be unique creations any chef would be proud to display. Entertainment for the event will be provided by Autumn Rum (Marc Funaro and Connie Silverbrand), United Brass, Colleen and Allan Hopson, and John and Kaitlyn Jackson.
