Stars and Stripes Classic fun for everyone

The second night consolation game of the Stars and Stripes Classic ended in a 91-91 tie. Team Mirabito Energy head coach Matt Osborne righted the ship after Tuesday’s loss. “I told them to relax a lit bit and have fun. I thought we were a little tight, we didn't shoot the ball very well in the first game. We shot the ball a lot better tonight,” said Osborne.
Norwich’s Michael Sutton, fresh off of being named Section IV Class B Player of the Year, had two points. Sutton is humbled by the award and by the officials selection of him for the tournament.
“It means a lot. It means that other people besides just your own team and your owns fans, the officials notice your sportsmanship and they notice how well you play,” said Sutton. He is modest and thankful to his team and coaches for the award. “I wouldn’t have done it with out my team. It feels great. Tom Collier and Brian Collier did it for me. I wouldn’t be Class B Player of the Year without them,” said Sutton.
While Sutton remains undecided about his future after high school, Senior Nate Shackelton has decided to play Division III baseball next year at Kueka College. Shackelton enjoyed playing in the Stars and Stripes Classic. “Its a lot different, the talent level is a lot different. It’s comparable to playing college basketball,” said Shackelton, “I’m having a lot of fun. I love competition.”
Team Mirabito Energy head coach Matt Osborne divided the playing time up evenly between the 13 players. “I told them to go out and have fun, and play real hard because you’re not going to be out there for a long time. So get up an down the floor and try to get some easy baskets,” said Osborne.
The Unadilla Valley head basketball coach started coaching in the tournament last year and was just asked to return to the helm in 2015, he plans to return. “It’s fun to get all the kids together, practice is a lot of fun. There are a lot of very talented players and you just let them go out there and try to show what they can do,” said Osborne.
Green senior Brandon Davis had a great time playing in the tournament. “I’m having a lot of fun because it’s so competitive and it’s cool to see what it would be like to play basketball in college because a lot of these kids are going to play college basketball,” said Davis. The forward did not take Thursday’s game lightly, scoring 12 points. “It’s really an honor to be picked for it,” said Davis.
