CHENANGO COUNTY – With road construction season right around the corner, the Chenango County Department of Public Works is still reeling from damages caused by severe flooding in 2011.

But that's an issue road crews plan to address this year, thanks to the securement of funding to repair the approximately $58,000 worth of damage that remains as a result of flooding. Money will be used for projects on county roads 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, and 44.

“We have some remaining projects from the fall, 2011, flooding and we have some newer projects that we're going to get to that were caused by flooding in 2013,” said Chenango County Public Works Director Shawn Fry.

In 2011, the county shouldered multiple instances of flooding that washed out roads, bridges and culverts across several townships. Though flooding caused by rain and melting snow in April, 2011, was not severe enough to trigger emergency relief funding, that caused by Tropical Storm Lee the following September was.

However, in order for the county to receive reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which will foot 80 percent the cost of repairs, funding for all projects has to be paid by the county in full and up-front, Fry explained. Approval for that funding was moved by the Chenango County Board of Supervisors this month.
