U.V. softball stuffed with sophomores

New Berlin––
The Unadilla Valley Storm varsity softball team will field four returning starters in 2014. Two seniors; Megan Smith and Megan Gould, and two sophomores; Jackie Smith and Blaize Kolvik. While Unadilla Valley fields no jayvee team, head coach Hannah Johnson coached the modified team last year and has moved up with a strong supporting cast.
The Storm is a team without a junior. “We’re pretty young,” said Johnson.
The Storm is a team with nine sophomores. “I had eight of these kids last year,’ said Johnson.
One of the few sophomores she did not coach last year, is pitcher and returning starter Jackie Smith. “She has some rise and her fastball is the main pitch,” said Johnson. Jackie Smith can also drive in runs, going 3-for-3 with two RBI last year, in a 16-15 barn-burner loss to Walton.
Tia Peck, freshman, will also pitch for U.V. “This will be a fundamental season,” said Johnson, “this is a building season for next year.”
The Storm will be a defensive-minded softball team with seniors Megan Smith, SS, and Megan Gould, 3B, leading the way in the hitting department. “(Gould) will be one of our leaders this year,” said Johnson.
The whole varsity team is working on there hitting under coach Johnson. They are working on some other things as well. “I really like my team to be well rounded. In school, how they treat adults, not just in softball. I want them to build character for later in life,” said Johnson.
