Smith, 43, had been with the department for 18 and a half years, was pronounced dead after an hour in emergency surgery. He is married and has one child.

Clark, also 43, had no known history mental problems or criminal history and police do not know the motive. Prior to taking Officer Smith’s weapon, he was unarmed.

According to police, Clark appeared to be a model employee prior to the incident. The baffling incident came without cause and investigators are left with very few clues as to motive in the case. “The village police department — faced with burying a colleague — must do so without fully understanding how it came to this,” said Zikuski at a press conference Monday afternoon.
