Beat the heat at local public pools

CHENANGO COUNTY – With temperatures flirting with the mid-eighties over the last weekend and into Monday, county residents were reminded of what sweltering summers in upstate can be like. With that in mind, many area municipal swimming pools have already begun the process of making necessary repairs and routine maintenance work to get these oases up and going for the sizzling days ahead.
There are four public swimming facilities within Chenango County, and below are the tentative seasonal opening dates, hours of operation and locations.
Bainbridge- The William S. Payne Memorial Park located on the corner of Walnut Ave. and Front St. will be the first municipal pool and is slated to open for the 2014 summer season on Saturday June 7. Since 1957, the Payne pool has served Bainbridge area residents as the place to chill when the temperature is unbearable.
The pool received a new liner for 2014, and the water is in and warming for a weekend opening.
The pool will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 8 p.m. on weekends for the duration of the school year.
Regular summer hours will commence during the summer break at which time the pool will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. daily with youth swim lessons offered during the mornings.

Oxford - The Oxford Town Pool is located behind the Oxford Academy Primary School at the corner of West Park Street and Grays Heights Road. The pool includes private men's and women's changing areas, showers, a pavilion and lifeguards on duty make for good clean and safe fun.
The pool is managed by the Town of Oxford Land & Water Conservation Fund, a cooperative project of the National Park Service-Department of the Interior & the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Oxford Town Pool offers swim lessons at no cost, and a sign up form for the 2014 sessions can be downloaded to print at townofoxfordny.com/town-pool.php.
Norwich- Named for a 28-year Norwich High School Athletic Director Kurt Beyer, the pool that has served Norwich native as well as out-of-towners alike since 1956, will be up and running for the community for 2014. Located at 91 Cortland St., Kurt Beyer is scheduled to be open for operation by the last weekend in June.
Open from noon to 8 p.m., adult open swim runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. and children must be accompanied by an adult during those hours. Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by someone age 15 or older from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
While no swim lessons are offered at the facility, the Norwich Youth Bureau does sponsor youth swim lessons at the Norwich High School indoor swimming pool on Midland Drive thought the summer from June 30 to July 18. Sherburne- The Sherburne Community Pool located on Chapel Street in the village of Sherburne will be open on Saturday June 21. The newly constructed public pool is an area favorite for many, and boasts new bath houses, playground, pavilion and ball park.
Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, with swim lesson times reserved from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from July 7 to August 7.
To register for swim lessons in Sherburne, go to the pool directly during normal hours of operation after June 25.
