Elites split doubleheader
COOPERSTOWN – The OCO Elites’ U-19 baseball team gained a split of a doubleheader Sunday at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.
The Elites opened with a 4-2 victory over the Schoharie County Legion, then dropped the back end falling to Cooperstown, 9-1.
Andrew Radke pitched four innings of hitless relief to earn the win. Radke fanned two and walked three Schoharie batters.
Down 2-0 after three, the Elites grabbed the lead for good with a three-run fourth. Mason Alford doubled in Paul Van Warner with the opening run, and Richard Ryan’s two-bagger scored Alford with the tying run. Radke helped his own cause with a run-scoring single to plate Ryan. The Elites added an insurance run in the sixth with Alford doubled and scored on Austin Taylor’s two-out double to left field.
Alford led OCO with two hits.
Cooperstown’s opening frame yielded three runs, and that was more than enough support for winning pitcher Joe Winsman. Winsman pitched 4 1-3 innings striking out five, and allowing four hits and one run.
Ethan Bliss, Nico Krull, and Clayton Lyons combined for six hits and three RBI in the win.
The Elites’ lone run came in the fourth when Ryan singled to right, Taylor followed with a basehit to center, and Radke’s line drive to right field brought home Ryan to make it a 4-1 game. Winsman picked up an inning-ending strikeout to end the Elites’ threat.
