County employees say “no thanks” to contract

NORWICH – On Thursday, July 10, Chenango County employees went to the polls to vote on a purposed CSEA labor contract suggested by county administrators.
According the CSEA unit 6400's Facebook page, the union contract was voted down by a slim margin of seven votes, or .03 percent.
Of the 217 votes cast by county employees, 105 voted for and 112 voted against the contract.
“We would like to get the proposed contract back into the negotiation stage as quickly as possible so that we may move forward,” said Lisa Kerr, Chenango County Personnel Officer. “The County did reach a tentative agreement, but the contract was voted down by union members.”
Of the several contentious sticking points, one of the biggest issues amongst union employees revolves around around scheduled yearly wage raises versus the rate of inflation, according to a county employee.
Currently, county employees are working without a labor contract in place, and have been since the last five year contract expired in on December 31, 2013.
According to officials, the CSEA union does not mandate arbitration – so union members and the county will head back to the negotiation table as soon as schedules allow.
