North Norwich Supervisor considers asking town fire department to expand coverage
NORTH NORWICH – Robert E. Wansor, Supervisor of the Town of North Norwich, will be sending a letter to the property owners within in a proposed new fire contract district in the southern and western part of the Town of North Norwich.
Mr. Wansor has had several discussions with the fire commisioners of the North Norwich Fire District, who in turn have discussed the proposed expanded coverage with the officers and membership of the North Norwich Fire Department. Boundary lines were discussed, and considered by the fire commissioners and the officers of North Norwich Fire Department.
The Fire Department is willing to expand its coverage area to include more than 50 percent of the area presently covered by the City of Norwich Fire Contract. Areas that are to be in the new contract district are approximately equal distances from North Norwich Fire Department and Norwich City Fire Department. There are certain areas that would be more efficiently served by the City of Norwich, and those areas would remain contracted with the City of Norwich.
A primary reason for the North Norwich Fire District to expand coverage would be to allow many taxpayers of North Norwich to see a significant tax savings. The contract with the Norwich City Fire Department is very expensive, and significant tax savings could be seen by all taxpayers who would be covered by North Norwich Fire Contracts. The goal is to see the cost of the Fire Contract with the City of Norwich Fire Department reduced by 50 percent, while the increased coverage by North Norwich Fire Department would not cause North Norwich’s Fire District budget to increase by an equivalent amount. There would be a larger tax base to spread the budget costs over, thus reducing costs for all tax payers who are within the area covered by the North Norwich Fire District.
The ambulance/EMS contract is separate from the fire contract and that would not be changed.
Mr. Wansor wants to receive input from taxpayers in the proposed new Fire Contract District, as well as from other interested parties. He would like to be able to bring some tax relief where possible, but not without public support for the proposed Fire District.
The North Norwich Fire Department is ready and willing to add the new area, if there is interest. There will also be a public hearing scheduled to allow taxpayers the opportunity to ask questions about the proposed Fire contract, as well as voice their opinions on the proposed fire contract.
Mr. Wansor can be reached at 334-4703, or by email at DrBob.Wansor@gmail.com, or by regular mail at P.O. Box 164, North Norwich N.Y. 13814.
