Vestal turns on the jets to beat Greene

VESTAL – Vestal's high-speed attack had Greene reeling Wednesday night.
Nicole Jennings and Amanda Collins had two goals apiece for the Golden Bears to hand Greene an opening-game loss.
"We knew they were going to be good, and they were fast," said Greene coach Sue Carlin of Vestal. "They were just beating us to a lot of balls."
Greene pared a 2-0 deficit to a one-goal margin in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Vestal regained the momentum earning a penalty stroke, one that led to a decisive goal with 20 seconds left in the half. "That was a big momentum swing," Carlin said of the penalty stroke. "In the second half they got their jets going, and we couldn't stop them."
Greene's loan goal came on penalty corner when eighth-grader McKenna Sergi netted her first varsity goal off a Laura Durdon feed.
Greene hosts Walton Tuesday.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley's Emily Converse had one goal and one assist in the Storm's shutout win over Bainbridge-Guilford Wednesday.
Converse scored in the first half, and assisted on Sierra Badger's second-half goal.

Greene 4, Oxford 0
GREENE – Greene's constant pressure on offense paid dividends in the second half.
The Trojans scored three of their four goals in the second half to earn the shutout victory in head coach Mary McBride's first game as head coach.
Brynn Marker had the lone goal in the first half for Greene, who failed to capitalize on a couple of good scoring opportunities. "But we made up for it in the second half," McBride said.
Jenna Harrington scored in the second half, and J.B. Taft added two goals to pad the Trojans' scoring total. "The passing and communication amazed me," McBride said. "We played so well as a team tonight."
Greene plays Sidney tonight at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Trojans' tournament.

WINDSOR – Windsor did all of its scoring in the second half in a shutout victory over Norwich Monday.
Danielle Cary scored all of the Black Knights goals, the first tally seven minutes into the second half. "I was happy with the way we played in the first half, and I felt we outplayed them," said Norwich coach Adam Sprague. "We had some minor injuries in the second half that forced us to play a different style, and that opened up some space for Windsor. Once we have a full roster and can play without those small injuries, I think we will start seeing some better results."

Girls' Tennis

Seton Catholic Central 5, Norwich 2
BINGHAMTON – Seton Catholic Central swept all three doubles matches to avenge last season's loss to Norwich, Wednesday night at Binghamton.
Norwich gained a split in the four singles matches taking the number one and two matchups. Makenzie Maynard dropped Samantha Koulikas, 6-0, 6-2, and Caroline Stewart won a 2 1/2-hour battle with Alina Galyon, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3).
"It was a great match and a great win for Makenzie," said Norwich coach John Stewart. "It was a great win for Caroline, too."
Caroline Stewart overcame a 2-0 deficit in the decisive tiebreaker winning seven of the last eight points.
Norwich's second doubles team of Robyn Berger and Brooke Steigerwald stretched their match to three sets, the only competitive pairing in doubles.
Norwich is at Chenango Forks Friday and hosts Johnson City Monday.

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford improved its record to 2-0 Wednesday night bating Deposit in three games, 25-15, 25-23, 25-15.
Morgan Bullis had a team-high eight kills and seven assists for B-G. Cadi Baber served three aces and 13 total service points, and Lizzie Guis led the defense with six digs.

Autumn Bronson led Greene with three assists, four kills, two aces, and three blocks.

UV junior Hannah Lazarus had 10 aces to go with three kills: Returning senior Shannon McIntyre posted five kills and five aces; and Nicole Mackey chipped in with three assists and three kills.
Mariah Bullock led Oxford (0-2) with two aces and two kills.
