Arts Council to unveil 'plein aire' exhibit
NORWICH – The Chenango Arts Council will kick off its 2014-2015 season with a showing of art work expressive of the outdoors.
The council’s annual exhibit of “plein aire” paintings will be unveiled during an opening reception to be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries located at 27 W. Main St. in Norwich.
“This is always an exciting way to start the new season,” said Chenango Arts Council Operations Program Director Joyce Zummo. “It’s become a tradition for us to start each year with an exhibition of our plein aire painters.”
En plein aire, a French espression meaning “in the open air,” features the work of artists who take their canvas and paint brush outdoors. More than 25 plein aire pieces from nine different professional and semi-professional artists will be on display at the Arts Council gallery.
“Plein aire is a gowing movenement in the art world. Theoretically, you become part of the environment where you’re painitng,” explained Arts Council member Charlene Walling. “You paint what you see, what you hear, or what you feel.”
In addition to Friday’s opening reception, the gallery will also be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the annual Colorscape Arts Festival on Saturday. The exhibit will reamin on display through Sept. 27.
