Norwich volleyball team opens with STAC win

NORWICH – Coming off a home tournament championship last weekend, Norwich entered STAC competition Thursday, and came away with a sweep of Chenango Forks, 25-18, 25-12, 25-19.
Courtney Scheer served a team-high 8 aces; six-footer Meg Komendarek delivered 12 kills, Caitlyn Brown set nine assists, while Lauren Laughlin and Vanessa Salerno led the defense with four digs and three stuff blocks respectively.
Norwich was unbeaten in tournament play and lost just three games in an entire summer of action in preparation for the fall season.
"It's just plain teamwork," said Norwich coach Shelly Alger in summing up her team's success. "There is no 'me, me, me.' It's all about what is the best set and what is the best attack. They've worked hard all summer to accomplish what they've accomplished."
Norwich (1-0) travels to Susquehanna Valley Tuesday.

NEW BERLIN – Down 1-0 early, defending MAC champion Greene fought back with three unanswered goals.
Greene tied the game with under a minute left in the first half when Ben Kinney connected on a deflection off a free kick. Kinney then gave his club the lead for good scoring with 12 minutes left in regulation. Kevin Halsteter added insurance tallying his first goal of the year with four minutes to go
