Golden Novak Band returns to Norwich with debut CD in hand

NORWICH - Following a successful tour of Vermont and the release of the group's self-titled debut CD, the Syracuse-based Golden Novak Band will return to Rita's Tavern Sept. 6 for a 9 p.m. to midnight showcase featuring songs from the album, as well as the ensemble's penchant for extended jams and soulful (and danceable) grooves.
Jess Novak (guitar/fiddle/vocals) and Brian Golden (guitar/vocals) – the band's founding members and sole songwriters – both said they're excited for a second performance at Rita's, this time with all six members of the group that recorded the new album in attendance. The pair will be joined by keyboardist Mark Nanni, drummer Nick Andrews, bassist Paul Puzzullo and, for at least a few tunes, percussionist Randy Heuer. The performance marks the first time all six will hit the stage as a unit.
"We've had a rotating cast up until now," explained Golden. "Mark, Nick, Paul and Randy all perform with other groups as well, so it can be tough to get everyone together on the same stage. That being said, I can't wait to see what evolves as we move forward."
Moving forward is exactly what Golden and Novak are doing, with a five week tour of Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Nashville, TN in the books. The pair leave Syracuse for points south in late September, returning just in time for an October 31 Halloween show at Theater Mack, in Auburn, NY.
According to Golden, the tour is simply one more step in the right direction for he and Novak, who will be billed as the Golden Novak Duo for a little more than a month while on the road.
"We're taking an old school approach to the band and the music," said the 37-year-old guitarist. "Write, rehearse, record, perform, tour and repeat. As most people know this is a tough business, and you have to keep pushing ... keep working and never give up. And we refuse to give up."
Recorded, mixed and mastered in June and July of this summer at Moletrax East in Syracuse, The Golden Novak Band features seven original songs written by either Golden or Novak. The album is quickly gaining momentum, with songs such as Novak's "Rat A Tat," "New Song," and "The Phone," as well as Golden's "Let it Shine" and "Chasing," earning the pair new fans and rave reviews every time they hit the stage. Novak's "Hands On," (a funky tribute to the legendary James Brown) and "Good Enough" round out the disc, which will be available for $10 Saturday.
"We put everything we had into this album and it was a magical day in the studio when we put to tape the first performances," said Golden, who described the band's music as a mix of blues, rock, soul and funk. "People seem to be enjoying the CD and our live show, something we're always working to improve (the pair rehearse as often as time allows, sometimes up to eight hours a day), and that's what we love, seeing the music inspire. This is what we love to do and hopefully we'll be doing it for a long time to come."
The Golden Novak Band will perform from 9 p.m. to midnight (or later) on Sept. 6 at Rita's Tavern, while the Golden Novak Duo will perform from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Park Place Sports Lounge and 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Oxford Tavern. The album itself is also available in digital form on iTunes and Spotify.
