Teachout favored in Chenango, still unable to defeat Cuomo
CHENANGO COUNTY – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout came out the victor in Chenango County in Tuesday’s primary election, but fell short of upsetting Governor Andrew Cuomo in statewide polling results.
According to the Associated Press, Cuomo ultimately defeated Teachout in what was a closer than expected race. Nonetheless, results in Chenango County marginally favored Teachout in a 311 to 275 vote. Randy Credico, a Fordham University law professor, came in third and earned only 37 votes in Chenango County.
Teachout has criticized Cuomo for his support of charter schools and business-friendly tax cuts, and she argued Cuomo has not fulfilled promises to rebuke government corruption in Albany.
Cuomo will face Republican Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino in the general election in November.
In the Republican primary for the 52nd Senatorial District, incumbent Senator Tom Libous defeated challenger Denver Jones. Despite attacks on Libous fueled by recent charges of lying to the FBI during a corruption investigation, Libous was still heavily favored among district voters. In Chenango County, Libous defeated Jones in a vote of 1,032 to 472. The Chenango County Board of Elections reports only two writ-in votes in that race.
Lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Kathy Hochul was also favored by voters in the Democratic election. Hochul was able to hold off challenger Tim Wu, a Columbia University law professor. In Chenango County, Hochul gathered a total 310 votes to Wu’s 270 votes.
Incumbent Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy is not seeking re-election.
Hochul previously served a single term in the U.S. House and was working as a bank vice president when Cuomo chose her to be his running mate. Wu has criticized Hochul as being too conservative.
In November, Hochul will appear on the ballot for the seat of lieutenant governor going against Republican Chemung County Sheriff Chris Moss, who was chosen as Astorino’s running mate earlier this year.
