NORWICH –Seven games in the book, and Norwich has still not allowed a first-half goal.
The Purple Tornado scored the lone goal at the 19-minute mark, and held on for the shutout win Wednesday.
Junior Michaela Fazio scored her first goal of the season beating an SV defender, then lofting a shot over the goalie's hands.
The Sabers did create some offensive opportunities, but had just one shot on goal in the second half. "Shelby Benjamin was huge in the middle of the field for us (on defense), and Shannon Moore has been an unsung hero for us at sweeper," said Norwich coach Adam Sprague.
Norwich goalie Kassidy Seary made eight saves for the shutout. Norwich (3-4) plays at Johnson City Monday.

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville unveiled a new offensive formation, and it worked perfectly in a shutout over Adirondack Wednesday.
Savannah Irwin had two goals for S-E , one in each half, Taylor Coughlin had the initial Marauders goal, and defender Stacia Beckwith converted on a penalty kick in the final minute.
"Coming off a tough loss earlier in the week, this is just what we needed going into the Clinton game," said S-E coach Kylie Davis.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Tayler Nichols scored her second goal of the game with five minutes left in overtime to give G-MU a come-from-behind win over Richfield Springs Wednesday.
Nichols scored off a penalty kick to back up her second-half goal at the 29:56 mark that tied the game.
Richfield Springs scored just over five minutes into the game off a Tessa Buck goal, and held hat advantage for nearly 45 minutes.

Field Hockey

Morrisville-Eaton 5, Sherburne-Earlville 1
SHERBURNE – Morrisville-Eaton's prolific offense stopped Sherburne-Earlville's recent momentum with a four-goal victory Wednesday.
Jen Hilts scored 3:37 into the game, and Jessica Welsh added two more first-half goals for the three-goal halftime lead.
S-E's Kaley Judge countered for the home club early in the second half to give her team some hope. "They came back stronger after we scored," said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. "They're athletic, and they keep pounding on you."
Cooman did laud the goalie play of S-E’s Allison Johnson, and did say her team’s defense played better than the final score indicates. "We didn't play our best, but the official came up to us after the game and said it may not be any consolation, but she thought we had a good team."
The Marauders (2-4) play at Herkimer Monday.

Norwich 195, Owego 198
OWEGO – Norwich had four players break 40, the first time that has happened this season, in earning its first road win at Owego Wednesday.
Eighth-grader Alex Gage earned overall medalist honors leading Norwich with a career-best 36. Ryan Johnson, Nate Scheer and Joe Mioduszewski turned in matching 37s over the par-36 front nine at Pheasant Hill Golf Club, and Kai Scheer posted a 48.
"We needed this to happen, and today was that boost that they could do it," said Norwich coach David Branham. "Pheasant Hill is a place where you need a decent short game, and our short games showed up today."
The victory improved Norwich's record to 3-5 on the season.

Girls' Swimming

Chenango Forks 115, Greene 67
GREENE – Greene captured three events in a Tuesday night home meet against Greene.
The Trojans' Julia Arboit won the 50 free in 28.17; Taylor Wahlers scored 131.5 points to win the diving competition, and Kailey Yanusas captured the 500 free in 6:17.47.
Greene coach Mike Platta said the most arduous part of his season schedule, one in which the Trojans started with three losses, is now over. "The next few meets will be against teams where we are more equally matched as far as manpower and speed," the coach said.
Greene (0-3) hosts Whitney Point Friday.

Cross Country

Norwich splits with Seton, SV
BINGHAMTON – Norwich's boys split a three-way dual meet scoring event with Sus Valley and Seton Catholic Tuesday at Cole Park.
The Tornado lost to SV, 18-32, then defeated Seton by a 15-50 count.
Among all competitors in the race, Norwich senior Frank Garcia placed fourth overall in 16:30 over the 2.6-mile course, and teammate Ben Ericksen was next in fifth place timing 16:58.
Norwich's girls ran incomplete, but did boast the fourth- and fifth-place overall finishes, just like the NHS boys. Senior Esther Clemens was fourth in 20:49, and Danielle Slate was right behind her teammate finishing in 20:58

Cross Country

S-E wins its fair share
REMSEN – In a five-way meet with dual meet scoring, Sherburne-Earlville's boys won three of four, and the Marauders girls had an even 2-2 split Wednesday afternoon at Remsen.
The boys earned wins over Waterville, Old Forge, and the host team, and lost to Cooperstown. Meanwhile, the S-E girls defeated Waterville and Remsen.
Ian Benedict, a senior for the Marauders, was the overall winner amongst 30 total runners timing 19:19 over the five-kilometer layout. Kenny Ulrich was fifth with a personal-best 20:36, Tristan Rainford took 12th, and Jacob Bennett earning a scoring spot for the first time this season placing 20th.
"Our three and four guys stepped up for us," said S-E coach Anne Geary. "Bennett placing helped us out, and having two in the top five definitely helped with some points."
Miranda Wright's 10th-place finish out of 26 girls led S-E. Wright finished in 26:02, while Abby Ryan was next in 12th timing 28:48.
S-E is idle until next Wednesday's home meet, its only one of the season.
