The ‘Pumpkin Pub Crawl’ cometh

NORWICH – In a world divided by fans and foes of the Pumpkin Spice Latté, a time comes when all must rally together for the good of humanity.
This October, a new autumn wind will blow through the streets of downtown Norwich, bringing with it camaraderie, booze, and the possibility of someone dressed as a giant pumpkin.
Adding a new flair to an old tradition, organizers of the budding “Pumpkin Pub Crawl” aim to entice a new demographic to come out to enjoy 16th annual Pumpkin Festival – and beyond.
In 2013, a concept to create and organize the first “Pumpkin Pub Crawl” steadily came into fruition and garnered the attention of both would-be wandering patrons and local businesses alike.
“We didn't advertise this event at all last year – it was more of a word of mouth type thing,” said Tyler Oliver, organizer of what can now be officially called the second annual event.
“We had to test the water a bit and gauge whether or not the fundraiser event could hold its own and prove successful, said Oliver “And it was (successful).”
According to Oliver, the event reaped nearly $500 in earnings, which was pretty good considering that just one year before in 2012 the event had been cancelled due to lack of public participation. “It was a little discouraging,” added Oliver.
This isn't just any pub crawl – the event has a tangible benefactor.
“All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Pumpkin Festival committee for planning and bolstering the Pumpkin Festival of 2015,” said Oliver.
The second annual “Pumpkin Pub Crawl” will begin following the fireworks at the closing of the Annual Pumpkin Fest in downtown Norwich.
At this time the crawl has four stops, including The Blarney Stone Pub, The Broad Street Tavern, Rita's Lounge and Park Place Sports Bar.
“The concept is simple,” explained Oliver. “Participants purchase an orange wristband at the Pumpkin Fest tee shirt tent for $10, pick up their custom Pub Crawl beer mug, and visit the four local establishments where only those with the wristbands can partake in a variety of seasonal drink specials and uniquely themed drinks.”
Oliver said that the creativity and uniqueness of drinks and specials are left up to the individual establishments.
“It could range anywhere from signature cocktails and shots to a special reduced price on an exclusive beer,” said Oliver. Crawlers will have to visit each business to find out.
The Crawl will begin at the wrap of the Pumpkin Festival now in its 16th year which is scheduled for Saturday Oct. 4 this year.
