SHERBURNE – The sky was a radiant blue, the sun was warm and sensational, and smiles were abundant on September 27th in Sherburne when the 2014 Historic Walking Tour kicked off at noon. One tour-goer said it all: “I have never been on such a wonderful house tour!”

On the last Saturday in September, people came from miles around – Hamilton, Norwich, Syracuse, Oneonta, and one couple from as far away as Boston – to partake in Sherburne’s history. Homeowners were welcoming and docents informative.

Groups of people strolled the sidewalks and were amazed at this village’s treasures, from the basement of The Sherburne Inn to the cupola atop the Kenyon House. The five-hour tour was almost too short to enjoy the 13 properties. There was nary a complaint, however, as guests donned booties and ventured inside to marvel at the hundred-year-old wood inlay flooring, ceiling medallions, intricate window casings, church bell towers, and marvelously preserved “painted ladies.” To top it off, a farmers market in Gaines Park offered produce and meat and flowers and snacks and crafts on what was a spectacular day in early autumn.
