Staple Sherburne eatery hosts grand opening this weekend

SHERBURNE – The more things change, the more they seem the same – when it comes to melding together old traditions with new flair, the management at the newly remodeled Nina's Italian Grill in Sherburne have hit the mark.
Formerly Lewis' restaurant, renowned for its family atmosphere, signature dishes and iconic lighthouse, the village's staple eatery is conveniently nestled at the junction of state Routes 12 and 12-B on the north side of town.
While the building has a new set of owners and has seen extensive facelift, much of the family traditions that have been well honed over more than seven decades still remain. “ Lewis' Restaurant [was] part of the Sherburne and surrounding communities for nearly 71 years,” said former owner Rich Lewis.
Lewis retraces the lineage back to an ESSO gas station leased by his in 1942. The ESSO gas station day were numbered the day a patron enjoyed a plateful of home made spaghetti Lewis' mother had made for his father.
According to General Manager Seth Knapp, often times dishes that were very popular during the Lewis' tenure are offered as specials, and at least two dishes on the Nina's menus harken back to the heyday of the Lewis operation.
“One of the best-selling dishes that the Lewis' we know for were their Utica Greens – which out of respect and homage we aptly re-named “Lewis' Greens,” said part-owner Sal Barresi.
Another source of continuity in the kitchen through the transaction was the retention of Russell Nelson, long-time chef with the Lewis family.
“With Russ comes decades of experience in the kitchen,” said Knapp “Chances are if you loved what came out of the Lewis kitchen you'll love what comes out of ours,” he added.
Lewis said, “As my daughters got older and went off to college, I was looking towards retirement. I was approached by Nina's owners to take over the restaurant and sold out to them. It has been a smooth transfer to the new owners and I still work with them as questions arise about the business,” he said.
“I am pleased to see the new management keeping the same traditions we value.” said Lewis.
Nina's Italian Grill has been busy ahead of its weekend-long grand opening celebration set Oct. 10-12, 2014. “We'll have contests, giveaways, and specials all weekend long,” said Knapp.
Knapp indicated that in freshly appointed, modern sports bar located to the front of the establishment those who come out to help celebrate the grand opening will enjoy a “Happy hour all weekend long.”
“Half price draft beer, well drinks and wine are one of the specials we're running all weekend for the event,” said Knapp. In addition to drink specials, Nina's will also have a spaghetti and meatballs meal for $7.95.
