Y-dances: a wholesome community tradition
NORWICH — A longstanding tradition for Norwich youths has recently seen a revival after a short lived decline, and organizers are pleased that the party’s just getting started.
For as long as most familiar with downtown happenings can remember, youth and teen dances hosted at the Norwich Family YMCA (more affectionately known as Y dances) have offered school-aged community members a safe haven of fun, and something to look forward to on Friday nights.
“We've done this for many years,” said Ryan Revoir, organizer, host and DJ for the Y dances. “Y dances are a safe and chaperoned place where youths and teens can come dance, de-stress and just be kids.
As an area DJ with Rockstar DJ service by trade, Revoir offers his Friday nights at the YMCA as a public service to his community. He has been commissioned and led Y dances for approximately eight years, and does it “because it's a great cause.”
“I grew up in the generation of Y dances in the basement of the old building, and it feels great to host a little piece of history that today's kids will look back on for the rest of their lives,” said Revoir.
According to Revoir, every three or four years there's a slight decline in attendance as one group of youths “grow up” and move on to middle and high school. But currently, things are on the upswing again.
“We held our annual Halloween dance last week and had more than 130 kids in the community room, which was a fantastic turnout—much more than we had been seeing lately,” Revoir said.
Y dances are not discriminate in terms of where youths are from. The dance floor is often abuzz with children from Sherburne, Oxford and Greene as well.
“The bottom line is that Y dances are a great opportunity for area youths to get together and interact with one another in a safe environment when they could potentially be who-knows-where doing who-knows-what,” said Revoir
Revoir said proceeds from admissions go directly into programming and community enrichment activities, such as Y dances and other YMCA programs.
Y dances are typically held once per month. The next scheduled Y-dance will be Friday, Nov. 21. Admission is $5.
Parents and youths interested in Y dances or any activities held at the Norwich Family YMCA are invited to like the Facebook page “Norwich Family YMCA,” or visit the organization on the web at norwichymca.com.
