Sheriff’s Office provides public with trick-or-treating advice

CHENANGO COUNTY — With Halloween quickly approaching, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office offered tips to the public with regard to keeping children and families safe.
OffenderWatch, a sex offender mapping and notification service, can be utilized by visiting the CCSO website. This service can help citizens in avoiding potentially dangerous homes.
There are approximately 187 registered sex offenders in Chenango County.
“We do the best we can in making sure sex offenders live where they tell us, so it is crucial that our citizens visit our website www.chenangosheriff.us to see who the registered sex offenders are and where they are living,” said Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr.
The office encourages residents to check any addresses on OffenderWatch where they or their family spends time. The mapping feature will show exactly where a sex offender lives.
Free automatic email updates are also available, which would inform a citizen if an offender moves within a specific radius of the address registered.
“If you aren’t planning on trick-or-treating in your neighborhood, but will be in a different neighborhood, register that address so you know which houses to avoid,” said Cutting. “You can register any and all addresses where your children spend time, for example friends’, grandparents’, or babysitters’ addresses.”
All alerts are in real-time and are sent out via email as soon as a new offender is registered with the CCSO.
“The benefit of registering for this free, confidential email alert service is that is allows us to monitor important addresses for you, thereby keeping you up-to-date concerning newly registered offenders and making it unnecessary for you to have to check important addresses daily or even weekly,” said Cutting.
Residents are strongly encouraged by the CCSO to visit www.chenangosheriff.us, click the link “Sex offender notification and sear” and follow the instructions to check for offenders in their neighborhood. To register for email alerts regarding nearby offenders, interested persons must click the “Register for email alerts” link.
Additionally, the CCSO offers the smartphone app MobilePatrol, where the public is able to view photos and other information of all level 2 and 3 sex offenders in Chenango County. To download the app on either an Apple or Android smartphone, visit the iTunes store or GooglePlay Store respectively.
Cutting and the entire staff at the CCSO encourage all to have a safe and fun Halloween. “Knowledge is power and knowing where the registered sex offenders reside in your area can help you make the best choices for safe and enjoyable Halloween activities,” read a release from the CCSO.
For additional information, contact the CCSO at 334-2000 or visit the website.
