Greene posts second straight shutout win to close season
Greene 49, Harpursville/Afton 0
HARPURSVILLE – A Greene coach said in the aftermath of Saturday’s season-ending win over Harpursville/Afton that no team in the Trojans’ division would want to play them now.
We’ll never know if that statement is true, but what we do know is that Greene is in good stead for next season after pitching a second straight shutout. Greene won four of its last five to wind up 4-5 overall, and captured its last three games by a combined score of 99-6.
“We had a rough start, and it’s very easy with a rough start to fall apart and tank things. Instead, we pulled together, and we became a good football team,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “I think, going into next season, that people will recognize us as a good football team.”
For the third straight game, Greene held the opposing team to under 100 yards rushing. If not for the hard running and elusiveness of Hornets senior quarterback Devon Dean, the host club may have ended up with negative yards for the game.
The Trojans dominated the line of scrimmage from the opening snap led by departing senior captain, Wyatt VanderBunt. VanderBunt and his blocking mates opened holes for several Greene backs to the tune of 274 total yards and over six yards per carry.
Greene drove 47 yards for a score on its opening possession. Sophomore quarterback Zach Orzell used an option keeper to race 33 yards to paydirt.
The Trojans picked up steam in the second stanza adding four more touchdowns to build a 35-0 halftime lead. Early in the second, Orzell broke free on a quarterback sneak covering 11 yards for a touchdown.
Just over a minute later, John Hadac sacked Dean in the endzone, and forced a fumble in the process. Dalton Brower covered the loose ball for the third Trojans score.
Orzell then hit Dylan Barton on a perfectly thrown 33-yard scoring toss with 3:49 left in the quarter, and Orzell’s third touchdown of the quarter, another 11-yarder with 28 seconds left in the half, upped the lead to 35-0.
“Honestly, Harpursville/Afton was a playoff team, and was the sixth playoff team we’ve faced in nine weeks,” Gorton said. “That we’ve played that many playoff teams this season has helped us.”
Tristan Carter and Cole Nelson, two Greene seniors, had scoring runs in the third quarter. As has been customary of good Trojans teams in the past, the yards gained on the ground were spread around to a number of players. Five backs ran for at least 38 yards with sophomore Luke Erickson leading with 77 yards, and fellow sophomore Orzell winding up with 60. Orzell also completed 5 of 9 passes for 94 yards.
“The kids are in a much better place than they were at the start of the season,” Gorton said. “I can’t wait until next year.”

Bainbridge-Guilford 28, Whitney Point 20 (OT)
BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford finished its 2014 season with back-to-back victories topping Whitney Point in overtime Thursday night.
Dylan Moffitt, who had already ran for three scores and 215 yards on the ground, intercepted a Whitney Point pass in overtime to seal the Bobcats’ victory.
B-G took the lead in overtime with its first possession when Ben Bivar scored from 11 yards out. The Bobcats used a trick play on the extra-point kick when holder Bailey Green pulled the ball out and hit Austin Carr for the conversion pass.
All three of Moffitt’s scoring runs served as answers to Whitney Point touchdowns. Moffitt had a three-yard TD, a 53-yard jaunt, and a 16-yard dash in the fourth that tied the game.
“Moffitt just battles, and that interception was a fitting way to end his high school career,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “It was so nice to get those last two wins, and we hope to get something going next year.”

Mount Markham 19, Unadilla Valley 18
WEST WINFIELD – Mount Markham’s Kyle Yager was contained most of the day, but the 1,000-yard rusher broke free in the fourth scoring from 36 yards out for the tying touchdown. A successful extra point proved the margin of victory over the Storm in Thursday’s contest.
Yager had 164 yards rushing on 30 carries against the Storm defense.
UV scored all three of its touchdowns through the air. Quarterback Mason Fernette had a 44-yard TD toss to Hank deGlee in the opening quarter, then hooked up with Ryan Postma on TD connections of 45 and 30 yards in the second and third quarter respectively.
Postma’s second TD gave UV (2-7) an 18-12 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Early on, UV failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities successfully executing two onside kicks, neither of which resulted in points. “This is a game that we lost, but it was one of those where you felt like you were winning the whole time,” said UV coach Mark Segina. “It was definitely a much better performance by us than the previous two weeks.”
Fernette threw for 203 yards, Postma had 115 yards receiving, and deGlee caught a season-best five balls for 75 yards.
