NORWICH – Not since the state championship seasons 20 seasons ago has a Norwich team so thoroughly thrashed the opposition.
Playing its home opener two days before Christmas Tuesday night, Norwich presented the faithful with a barrage of points to win its fourth straight game heading into this weekend’s Stop-DWI Tournament.
Owego went six minutes before scoring its first basket of the game, settled for just two free throws to start the second half before converting a field goal with 1:52 left, and didn’t make a basket – or score a single point – in the fourth quarter.
And that last quarter was against Norwich’s second unit. Yes, not a starter on the floor for the Purple Tornado over the last eight minutes as the “second string” compiled a 24-0 final stanza.
The Tornado bench scored 47 points for the game with sixth man Jordan Vinal scoring a team-high 13 points on 6-for-6 shooting. “We know our bench is pretty good, it was just one of those games where we couldn’t miss tonight, and they couldn’t make a shot,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier.
Norwich shot 60 percent from the field for the game, and Owego was just 17 percent on its attempts.
Norwich had runs of 12-0, 8-0, and 14-0 in the first half, and closed the quarter with eight more unanswered points including back-to-back three balls in the final minute from Zan Stewart.
Stewart and Michael Oralls had 12 points to lead the NHS starters, backup guard Jake Walsh also bucketed an even dozen, and reserve Tre Bonham netted 10 points. Carlos Ithier dished out a team-high nine assists, and Walsh handed out five helpers.
In the JV game, DaShawn King scored 18 points, while Ryan Johnson and Michael Carson scored 13 each in Norwich’s 59-49 win. The JV team improved to 3-1 overall.
Winners of four straight, Norwich plays Sunday at the Broome County Arena at 11:15 a.m. against Owego.

OWEGO – Owego has given Norwich fits over the past five seasons.
After the first quarter Tuesday night, the Tornado had no such trouble with the Indians running away for a 26-point victory Tuesday evening.
The win improved the Tornado’s mark to 5-0 on the season, the first time it has reached that many wins in a row to start a season in head coach Josh Bennett’s tenure. “We played great defense after the first quarter,” Bennett said. “Their coach had his kids well prepared for us, but our girls made some nice adjustments on the fly, and we shot the ball very well from the perimeter.”
Norwich had a season-high seven three-pointers, and senior Caitlyn Brown kick-started a big second quarter hitting back-to-back threes early in the period. Norwich outscored Owego 21-5 in the quarter to lead by 16 at the break, 30-14.
Makenzie Maynard had 12 points to lead Norwich, Shelby Benjamin netted 10, and Brown and Savannah Williams scored nine apiece– all on three-pointers. “We probably had nine kids that can go for double figures on any given night,” Bennett said. “This is the most balanced scoring team I’ve ever had.”
Norwich plays Skaneateles Dec. 27 at Onondaga Community College.
