United Way campaign draws to close on Wednesday
NORWICH – As another year winds down in Chenango County, the clock for the Chenango United Way's annual funding campaign is quickly drawing to a close as well.
Given a slow start this year, the initiative to raise more that $420,000 in community-enriching funding has been an overall success.
As of Monday, the Chenango United Way has attained more than 95 percent – $399,184 – of its goal, which at one point in the campaign seemed beyond the scope of possibility.
“We had a real scare through November,” said CUW Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco. “We certainly were bracing ourselves and our community partners for a worst-case-scenario situation.”
While it was impossible to calculate the final outcome with 100 percent certainty, projected forecasts based upon past years' pledges and trends indicated the possibility of big trouble early on for the organization.
Several area programs including Catholic Charities, The Place and Opportunities for Chenango that vie for grant funding made possible by the annual campaign were also facing the potential for a substantial blow to their bottom lines with a decrease in funds to go around.
A number of outstanding pledges arrived to the United Way much later than in previous years, but nonetheless the majority of donors have made good on their promise and commitment to the community.
Monaco echoed that the annual campaign will close at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 31. All pledges and donations must be in by then to be counted in this year’s fundraising.
“We're still looking to raise as much as possible of the additional $22,000 or so needed to reach our goal this year. The people and businesses of Chenango County have been amazingly generous to get us this far, and there is definitely still time to meet the mark,” said Monaco.
