SHENENDEHOWA – Sherburne-Earlville wrestlers Jack Buell and Garrett DuVall captured individual titles at the Shenendehowa Invitational Saturday evening.

Buell and DuVall topped opponents who had prior wins over them to take the 195- and 220-pound titles respectively.

Buell, who had lost two of three bouts with Unatego’s Riley Hanrahan this season, picked up a throw for two points in the final 10 seconds to rally for a 3-2 victory.

DuVall’s win was not nearly as dramatic. A 4-3 loser to Bethlehem’s Chris Tangora in this same tournament’s finals a year ago, DuVall led by one point entering the third, then picked up an escape to advance the lead to two. Tangora was subsequently disqualified later in the period to give DuVall the championship.

“This isn’t the Eastern States, but there were a lot of tough teams there,” said S-E coach Bim Palmer, who noted the state’s top team, Minisink Valley, was in the field. “We went in with a game plan (for Jack and Garrett), and they came through.”

Buell had lost two previous tournaments finals appearances this season against Hanrahan, but beat the Spartans wrestler in the Windsor Christmas Tournament three weeks ago. “Hopefully, with some good luck, if both guys stay healthy, they’ll see each other at states and settle the tie,” Palmer said of Buell and Hanrahan.
