Woman sentenced in court for drug charges

NORWICH – A mother with a history of drug abuse –who lost her child due to legal issues – was sentenced to jail in Norwich City Court on Jan. 27.
Jovonne Woolever, 29, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree out of the City of Norwich.
Woolever is currently being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility for another criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree charge and an additional charge of criminal mischief out of the Town of Norwich.
She was sentenced to 60 days of jail for the criminal possession charge and 45 days in jail for the criminal mischief charge by the Town of Norwich Court.
According to Judge James E. Downey, Woolever has a history of misdemeanor drug charges and drug-related crimes. Her public defender, Aaron Dean, also said she has a history of hospital admissions in Binghamton because of her drug use.
Woolever was picked up in Madison County because she lives there, near Hamilton. Despite her living in Madison County, her child is currently in foster care in Chenango County.
Dean requested Downey grant Woolever driving privileges to visit her son once she is released from jail, since her license is currently suspended.
“... In order for her to re-establish what was once a loving relationship with the child,” said Dean.
When Downey asked if Woolever had a car, Dean said her car was impounded because a friend had borrowed it and had been stopped by authorities.
Dean said there is a good chance Woolever can clean up her legal matters within the next six months because she is being placed on probation in Madison County.
Downey said it is clear Woolever's criminal history is based on substance abuse.
Woolever pleaded guilty to the A misdemeanor of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree.
She was sentenced to 45 days in the county jail to run concurrent with her jail sentences out of the Town of Norwich Court, and her driving privileges were suspended for six months. She is also required to pay a $250 fine within 60 days of her release.
