Bullis leads Bobcats to fourth MAC title

ONEONTA – Good things happen for Bainbridge-Guilford when senior Morgan Bullis is on the floor.
The Bobcats forward fouled out in an early-season meeting with Delhi. Saturday afternoon in the Midstate Athletic Conference girls’ basketball championship game, Bullis was available for all 32 minutes in B-G’s 44-37 victory at the Oneonta State Alumni Field House.
Bullis scored 19 points, pulled down 20 boards, and had five steals as the Bobcats won their fourth MAC title and fifth league title overall in head coach Bob Conway’s 24-year tenure.
“We were up 18 the first time we played them, I fouled out, and we lost,” Bullis said, a fourth-year varsity player. “The rest of my team was saying (before the game), ‘Morgan, you have to stay on the court, you have to stay on the court.’ I just kept telling myself, ‘composure.’”
Bullis was composed, but so, too were the rest of the Bobcats’ players including eighth-grader Abi Selfridge, owner of a 10-point, 8-rebound night off the bench, and freshman Megan Palmatier, who scored nine points to go with eight boards. Fellow senior Taylor Palmatier didn’t have her best scoring night, but delivered numerous quality passes, and was an integral part of a Bobcats team that allowed just nine combined Delhi points in the middle two quarters to take a 10-point lead into the fourth.
B-G coach Bob Conway knew Delhi and its deep bench would make a late run, and was glad his team had a little bit of a cushion.
“They’re athletic, they play 12 kids, and they keep coming at you,” Conway said of the Bulldogs. “I knew we probably would get tired, but after they cut it to three, we did a nice job of running some offense. We didn’t score, but we got ourselves back under control.”
The Bulldogs, who had just one loss entering the game, started their fourth-quarter move with just under 4 1/2 minutes left in the game on Logan Bruce’s two free throws. That bucket initiated an 11-4 spurt, and when Adelena Sackett drove for a layup, her club was within 38-35 with 1:27 left.
With Bullis on the floor, however, B-G was able to respond. Bullis hit two free throws on the next possession when she was tripped up on a drive to the basket. Taylor Palmatier hit one free throw after a defensive stop, and Marissa Thornton made a big steal with 30 seconds left intercepting a crosscourt pass. Thornton missed the layup, but Selfridge was fouled on the offensive rebound. Selfridge hit two free throws with 25.4 seconds left giving B-G a 43-35 lead.
“Abi, and the freshman (Megan Palmatier) have been huge contributors for us,” Conway said. “They both go out on the court and play with confidence.”
The victory was the 14th straight for B-G (16-2), who lost the team’s season-opener, and had a .500 record through four games. Certainly, at that point, Conway could not predict his team would end the MAC season on top. “Maybe,” Conway said when asked if he thought his team had league championship potential. “All I can say is that we’ve had a great season so far. They listen, and work hard to accomplish what we talk about in practice.”
