Burst pipe forces Sidney Center BOCES to evacuate

SIDNEY – The DCMO BOCES Harrold Campus in Sidney Center evacuated students on Tuesday.
At approximately 11:23 a.m., the fire alarm was activated when steam from a burst water pipe tripped a smoke detector. The building was evacuated as following DCMO BOCES emergency procedures and the fire department arrived on the scene.
“To ensure the safety of our students, the campus was evacuated,” said Rick Shaw, Health and Safety Coordinator for DCMO BOCES. “As a preventive measure, students were dismissed and sent to their home districts. Staff was also dismissed.”
Shaw also said that at no time was there a fire in the building and no one was in immediate danger.
He added, “By 3 p.m., the pipe was repaired and a safety check completed. District Superintendent William Tammaro announced that school will resume tomorrow on our normal schedule.”
DCMO BOCES serves 16 school districts in Delaware, Chenango, Madison and Otsego county. Over 500 students attend classes at the Harrold Campus. Shaw encouraged parents to check the website for any updates.
