Man in jail following alleged assault of a toddler
NORWICH – A 29-year-old Norwich man sits in the Chenango County Correctional Facility after being charged with crimes that allege he caused serious physical injury to a toddler.
At approximately 5:31 p.m. Thursday, the Norwich Police Department received a call from Chenango County Child Protective Services.
Child Protective Services reported to the NPD that they were investigating a case involving an alleged assault.
The alleged assault involved a three-year-old child.
Both detectives from the police department and members of Child Protective Services carried out an investigation that led to the arrest of Zane T. Abbott.
Abbott, of Mitchell Street in Norwich, was charged with assault in the second degree, a class D felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
The child was first transported to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital to be treated for the injuries sustained. The victim was then later transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for further evaluation.
It was not released as to whether the child was a stranger or non-stranger to Abbott.
Per New York State Penal Law, assault in the second degree includes “being eighteen years old or more and with intent to cause physical injury to a person less than seven years old, the defendant causes such injury to such person.”
Following his arrest, Abbott was arraigned in Norwich City Court.
He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail.
As of press time, Abbott remains incarcerated, and will appear in court at a later date.
