Marchant inducted into Wilkes Athletics HOF
WILKES BARRE, Pa. – Retired Norwich teacher and coach, Richard (Rick) Marchant was recently inducted into the Wilkes University Athletics Hall of Fame.
Marchant was part of the twenty-second class of inductees and the first swimmer to be honored by the school's hall of fame.
Marchant was a four-year letter winner for the Colonels, and was co-captain of the men's swimming team in 1975 and 1976. His senior season, he was fifth in the conference in the 50 freestyle, fifth in the 100 free, and sixth in the 100 butterfly. During his junior year, Marchant was third in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 50 freestyle.
After his first two years at Wilkes, Marchant left college to serve in the United States Marine Corps from 1972 to 1974 before returning to Wilkes.
A Norwich High School graduate, Marchant was a high school art teacher and served separate stints as the school's varsity girls' and boys' swimming coach. As a masters swimmer, Marchant earned dozens of gold medals in the Empire State Games.
