Pathfinder Produce fresh produce market celebrates second anniversary this month
NORWICH – The Second Anniversary Celebration of Pathfinder Produce – Pathfinder Village's weekly fresh produce market – will take place on Thursday, March 19, offering discounted prices on all sales.
Pathfinder Produce is the Village’s extremely successful produce market that is open to the public each Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. The Market is held at Pathfinder Produce in the Village Commons building.
On Thursday, March 19, the Market will be offering 5 percent off all sales in celebration of their two-year mark.
Since the Edmeston region has no readily accessible supermarket that sells fresh foods, the Pathfinder market ships in produce through the Village’s regular suppliers and offers a variety of items at competitive prices to help local families and seniors eat better.
“Every week we offer a fresh produce market over here at Pathfinder Village because our immediate region has no access to fresh fruits and vegetables in an easy manner,” said Lori Grace, at Pathfinder Village. “You have to drive like a half hour to go to a convenient grocery store and a lot of people just can't make that drive.”
“It's a really convenient way for them to shop locally and to increase the number of fresh item that they are putting in their menus at home,” said Grace.
According to Grace, the Market carries a wide variety of items. “We generally offer thirty different items each week – everything from spinach to squash to apples to grapes. You name it,” said Grace.
Pathfinder Produce, which also offers a seasonal garden-to-table growing program in the warmer months, was developed in affiliation with the Bassett Research Institute and the Edmeston Central School’s 5210 Wellness Committee.
The Edmeston 5210 Program is a community based effort to have people become more aware of better nutrition and to become healthier through physical activity.
“For the past two years our community organizations have been working together – originally fostered through Bassett Research Institute – to design programs in the school, in the community, and through Pathfinder, so people are more aware of their physical health and what they are serving to their families,” said Grace. “We want to increase families' intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.”
“The stuff is great – really fresh,” said Grace. “Because we don't have the expenses of running a regular grocery store, we are able to keep prices very competitive.”
The Market is staffed by Village staff members, members of our vocational program, and community volunteers.
According to press release from Pathfinder Village, “All produce will be marked down five percent on March 19, and specialty items celebrating World Down Syndrome Day (March 21) from the Pathfinder Bakery and Café will be offered. The Village’s Vocational Program members will be presenting several recipe samples, including a vegetable stir-fry and avocado salsa from the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca. There will also be door prizes and other promotional activities. In the spirit of the day, Village staff members will wear blue and yellow, colors traditionally representing Down syndrome. The Pathfinder Community Chapel bell will also be rung 21 times at 3:21 p.m.”
Pathfinder Produce sends out a price list every week highlighting what each week's Market has to offer. For those interested in getting on the mailing list, follow the them on Facebook or contact Lori Grace at lgrace@pathfindervillage.org or call her at 965-8377, ext. 115.
